Chapter 10/MacMurrough
A Desperate Aoife
Aoife was distraught. Her tear stained face felt cold in the late afternoon breeze. She needed to find Finn. After the meeting with her father, her state of mind was reckless, she would leave the castle for good right then if she could. She told herself she wouldn’t miss any of it. She would miss her mother, but Urlachen would be leaving soon anyway to start her new life. She felt she could just disappear and begin her life with Finn. She sat down on a log and imagined the two of them living happily, on a small farm perhaps. She wasn’t like Urlachen, she didn’t need to live a wealthy life in a castle. A comfortable home big enough for the children they would have would be very satisfying for Aoife.
As she waited for Finn to find her, which he always did, she lay down on some hay near the stables. She fell asleep from the exhaustion of crying and dreamt about her life with Finn.

When Finn finally found her he didn’t know that her father had spoken to her. He gently woke her and while still in a dreamlike state she grabbed and hugged him desperately. Finn noticed that she had been crying and asked her what had happened.

“He knows Finn! He saw us the other night in the garden! He demanded that we end our association or he will!” Aoife said quickly through her tears.
“Did he mention that I tried to talk to him about us on the ride to Briefne? He gave me the same answer. I couldn’t change his mind.” Finn said desperately.

“”Well, we will be over unless we do something. “ Aoife replied after calming herself with thoughts of how to overcome her father.
“I can’t do anything right now. We have a war beginning in a few days Aoife. Your father has begun something that could become horrifying. Do you know what is going on? I have been busy all day preparing for the attack by O’Rourke. They are going to siege the castle and your father is allowing it. While he waits out the siege, you will be trapped inside for what could be weeks. We have to defend the castle night and day and take out as many of O’Rourke’s men as we can, I am afraid it will be bloody but your father doesn’t think it will get that far. He has too much confidence in the ability of his men and the castle to defend itself. O’Rourke will attack with everything he has to get his wife back.
“You are scared aren’t you Finn?” She asked him while squeezing his cold hands.
“I am scared for you and your family. I wish I could take you away from all of this, but I can’t. The soldiers and everyone who lives here needs me.” Finn replied trying to choke down his own tears.
“Everything will be ok, we will be fine and when this is over we will leave together and never turn back.” She said in a hopeful but concerned manner.

“Did you hear that your sister is to be wed this Sunday? Your father just announced it. She will be leaving the castle just in time.” Finn declared.
“I haven’t heard of this. I must go congratulate her. My father has certainly made sure that her life is blissful. At least he intended that for one of us. Aoife replied.
“You will be blissful too. Like you said, after this is over we will both be happy. I am certain I can talk with Lord O’Flattery and aquire a small manor on his land, and I can ask to be put back with his men to defend his properties.” Finn said with a smile. “We have much to look forward to once we leave this place.”
“I am serious about my decision Finn. I will leave no matter what happens.” Aoife said as she hugged Finn tightly.
“I know you will. I need to get back my love. I don’t know how much I will see you in the coming days. Stay safe, and when you hear the trouble start, do what you need to do. I love you.” He said as he departed.

Aoife walked slowly to her chamber and cried the rest of the night.

The Wedding Day
Urlachen was a stunning bride. This was the moment she had waited years for. It was apparent that she couldn’t wait to start her life with Donnel, leave the castle and her father behind. The thought of distancing herself from her father brought a feeling of great comfort to her.

They had the ceremony at Corcomroe Abbey with Brother Flanagan, a Cistercian monk, presiding over the mass. The Abbey was built by the O’Brien clan years earlier for the monks brought from Inishlounagt. Another name for the Abbey was “St. Mary of the Fertile Rock’ the reason being that it was built near a lushly green limestone valley in County
Clare. This valley was a favorite place for riding horses when Urlachen and Aoife were younger and it held wonderful memories for them.

When the blessings were said and the mass was over the assembly moved outside for a celebratory feast of cider and ale, fruits, bread, and meats of all kinds. Many of the villagers were in attendance, and the peasants clamored outside to catch a glimpse of their beautiful princess Urlachen. There were cheers and well wishes sent from the mouths of the villagers. Urlachen felt honored and blessed.

Lord Timothy and Lady Slane DeBurgh were present, among the other nobles and merchants, and it was announced that they were expecting their first child. They had been childless for many years with many failed pregnancies, so this was considered a true blessing. Slane DeBurgh had a bright disposition and was extremely hopeful about this baby. Most of the day was spent discussing with the other woman, and anyone who would listen, about good habits and daily rituals of a healthy pregnancy. She was desperate for advice.

Recently widowed Lord Ennis O’Flattery was there with his two teenage children Coleman and Coblaith. Despite their mourning that seemed to be joyful, the teens especially. They were enjoying the entertainment and spent much of the time with friends of their own age.

A special invitation was given to the Donnely family, Michan and his daughter Almaith. He worked at the castle doing garden work and helped in the stables. Even though he was considered a peasant, Urlachen knew him to be a kind and helpful worker so she always made him feel welcome in her presence. She may have also felt sad for his situation. Michan had been widowed also and was raising his daughter with no help. She often wondered why he hadn’t tried to take a new wife as there were many single women in the villages.
During the course of the day Urlachen couldn’t help noticing that Patrick, one of the Abbey caretakers, talking with Almaith most of the day. They were of the same age and class and she looked just as interested in Patrick. Michan had taken notice as well.

Urlachen was surpised to see the Braden family there. Liam Braden was a wine merchant and was away most of the time. They recently gave birth to a newborn baby boy they named Froech, to join their 11 month old boy Colin. His wife Cloddagh had her hands full with the two boys but seemed very happy conversing amongst the guests, she did however look tired.

Donnel had been speaking to his childhood friend Eamon MacNamara a lot of the time. Eamon’s father had recently died and left him with most of his money and land holdings. He had been a wealthy wool merchant and contracted Ergotism, an illness that poisons the system due to a fungal infection in grain, on his last voyage to France a few weeks ago. Eamon didn’t show any signs of mourning or sadness, in fact he seemed to only be interested in the young females at the affair. Urlachen had heard from Donnel that he was to marry soon so she thought his behavior rather odd, especially at a public event.

Aoife was pleased that Urlachen insisted that Finn be invited. Her father resisted but Urlachen stood her ground. Aoife was grateful for it gave her and Finn time to see each other before the fight began between her Father and the O’Rourke clan. They met behind the Abbey and took advantage of their time alone. Aoife had avoided her father since the day they spoke and the whole day of the wedding.

The buzz about the upcoming conflict was heard throughout the day from all of the guests. Dermott reassured everyone, especially Lord DeBurgh and Lord O’Flattery, that it would be a short battle and wouldn’t affect the villages and estates. Dermott had demanded one condition from his enemy O’Rourke, that he not bother the surrounding areas. Long ago during a war between the two kingdoms, O’Rourke’s men had stolen and killed many of the cattle of
Leinster. Dermott was determined not to repeat that mistake.
As the day progressed to evening, each guest began their journey home after saying their goodbyes and offering well wishes and prayers. Some traveled by wagon, others rode horses and many walked. Urlachen was especially concerned for her Mother and her beloved sister Aoife. She even went so far as to offer them lodging with her and Donnel during the conflict, but her mother wouldn’t hear of it. She told her daughter that the first days of marriage should be spent alone with her husband. Urlachen’s mother also had the new baby, they named Claire, at the castle to return to. She reassured Urlachen that they would remain safe and that the whole matter would be resolved quickly. Urlachen and Donnel then kissed them both goodbye, and as they mounted their wagon and knew she would miss them terribly.

After making their way to their new home by wagon, they stopped for a minute to admire the beautiful castle King O’Brien had given to his son and daughter in law.

When Urlachen least expected it Donnel picked up his bride and carried her through the heavy door into the place they would live happily day after day, the place they would raise their babies, the place they would entertain friends and family, the place they would grow old, and the place they would live together until death. Urlachen had never been so happy before, they both felt truly blessed to have found one another. She knew their life together would be as wonderful as she had imagined.
