The Royal Family of Leinster

Welcome to 12th century Ireland in the land of Leinster. The despised King Dermot MacMourough, the man most remembered throughout history for inviting the English into Ireland and facilitating the Norman invasion, and his long suffering family of beautiful Royals will entertain you with their tales of feudal rivalry, war, exile and forbidden love.

Our story starts in a majestic land of stoic castles, rolling green hills, and meager huts of wood and stone. The day began just as any other day but it definitely would turn out to be one that they would never forget. King Dermott was awaiting the news from around the counties of his kingdom. After waiting impatiently most of the morning for the king’s personal knight arrived to deliver the shattering news he was afraid to give.

Finn had been gone quite a few days so his homecoming was long awaited by Aoife, the kings eldest daughter. Finn and Aoife had known each other since they were young and had realized their feelings for each other years ago. They had kept their love a secret for many years since it wasn’t customary for a knight to marry royalty, especially King Dermott’s daughter. They would have to find a way someday.

snapshot_52d94a94_92dd0fdd.jpg

“I’ve missed you so Aoife.” Finn whispered softly.

“I have missed you as well, it is so hard to wait so long and not know if you are going to come back. Your job is so perilous. I wish we could be together always.” She replied wondering when the secrecy would end.

“Well I am committed to this duty for life, if we are to be married you will have to trust that I will stay safe.” He answered hoping he could fulfill that wish.

“Perhaps we shouldn’t be here out in the open, someone may see us. Let us go to the stable so you can tell me all about your journeys.” Aoife suggested as she heard a noise coming from the courtyard.

Finn looked down and sadly replied,” there is nothing I’d rather do but I have some news to relay to your father and it isn’t good. I dread telling him but I can’t waste any time.”

“I’ll meet you here later and then we will be together.”Aoife replied enthusiastically wrapping her arms around Finn’s strong neck.

snapshot_52d94a94_12dd16bf.jpg

Finn had to tell King Dermott that all was not well within the counties. The king expected to hear peaceful news but instead Finn relayed the information about the High King of Ireland (Turlough O’Conner) demanding that King Dermott be exiled out of his kingdom. Turlough had sent Teirnan O’Rourke, King of Breifne, to vanquish him since Teirnan and Dermott had been feuding bitterly for years. The two kings had been rivals ever since Dermott and O’Rourke’s wife had been caught having an adulterous affair. When the affair ended the battle began. O’Rourke couldn’t be more pleased to lead this assault. The high King didn’t care for King Dermott either ever since the day he was crowned. He always knew the time would come when he would find the support he needed to oust him from this charming isle in which they shared. There was too much beauty here for a man like Dermott.

Feudal rivalries between Kings were always taking place during this time in Ireland. Peace was a rarity. The beauty of the lands was just a facade for what went on behind castle doors and on the battlefield. Needless to say King Dermott was furious.

snapshot_52d94a94_72dd1717.jpg

Finn was somewhat afraid, yes he was a brave knight who had been in many battles but King Dermott was a ruthless man who was known for murder and kidnapping. Finn thought the King may in fact blame the messenger.

snapshot_52d94a94_32dd17c6.jpg

“How can this be?” The King screamed so loudly that the servants scrambled for safety. “Who does he think he is? This is my kingdom by birthright, how does he think he is going to get away with this?” He shouted with all the anger left in his soul.

He wanted to break something. He wanted to grab O’Conner and strangle the life out of him. Dermott tried to calm down as he caught a glance of Finn’s terrified eyes.

“I need to send word to King O’Lochlain. He will stand by me and we will fight this travesty.” Dermott spoke through his teeth but tried to remain composed. “In the meantime I know exactly what to do with O’Rourke, he has crossed me the last time.” Dermott whispered with a knowing smile on his face.

“Go clean yourself up and prepare the horses for departure.” Dermott told Finn despondently.

The King found himself alone in his study feeling somewhat hopeless. The time may have come when he might have let himself be pushed into a corner. He didn’t have many allies and he had too many enemies. Strong emotions began to build up inside Dermott for he felt almost defeated. To be exiled meant to leave the land he has always known, his land. How could he ever get out of this predicament? Softly he began to weep making sure no one was there to witness what he thought was a sign of weakness.

As Finn walked through the garden he caught a glance of Aoiffe standing with her sister. She was the only one who could make this day better. He looked up and their eyes met, he had to keep walking as to not let her sister know of anything peculiar going on between them. His thoughts went sailing back to the day he had first seen her. He was a Squire back then in training to be a palace guard, he was barely 15. She had been visiting the horses at the stable and sat down near him to read, she was stunningly beautiful. Her long braided blonde hair shone in the sunlight. He hadn’t seen many females before but he knew there was something remarkable about her. The way she was with the horses, so gentle and sweet made him smile. After that day he had always watched her and he was sure she was watching him as well. The day their eyes met Finn felt butterflies for the first time, he had to talk to her.

snapshot_72dfc450_b2dfd0a3.jpg

Aoiffe had always known there was something special about Finn. He wasn’t your average Squire, not like any of the ones she had seen around the palace, he was different. He had a gentle yet masculine appearance, he was strong too. She knew in her heart they would meet someday, they had to.

They met by accident 2 years later. It was raining and the ground was soggy and deep in some spots. Aoiffe had had an argument with her mother and had to escape the palace if only for a few minutes. Soaking wet she stood in the garden enjoying the cool rain hitting her face, she decided to walk to the stables to see her horse Chauncy. On the way there she took in the clean smell of the air and she felt harmonious. She had always loved the outdoors and felt free outside. As she was walking on the muddy trail she was surprised by a deep puddle. As her feet plunged into the mud she found herself somewhat stuck. She had to remove her shoes to free herself and while she was battling the mud Finn walked up behind her.

“Do you need some help?” He asked hoping she would say yes. “Actually I do if you please.” Aoiffe said shyly. As he grabbed her arm he felt an unusual feeling in the pit of his stomach.

With all of the bravery he could muster Finn said to Aoiffe “It would be easier if I carry you.” Not waiting for an answer he lifted her up and carried her the entire way back to the palace. Aoiffe was taken by surprise but she was very pleased with his gallantry. He smelled good too, like leather and wet grass. Finn was in heaven. He had waited for a moment like this for so long. When they reached the palace he set her down by a door and told her he would be back soon with her shoes but before he could run off she stopped him by grabbing his elbow. Again he felt that odd feeling in his gut.

“I don’t need those shoes, they are ruined anyway. Thank you for helping me. What is your name?” She asked wishing he would stay and talk to her a while. “My name is Finn and yours is Aoiffe, the king’s daughter. I asked someone.” He said with a big smile. “I have been waiting to meet you for a long time.”

Chapter 2

Queen Mor MacMurrough was a bitter woman. She was lonely. Marrying Dermott was the lowest point in her life. She was forced to marry him by her father and although she was optimistic, Dermott was a dreadful husband. She really hoped they would learn to love each other and at one point she may have but it was never reciprocated. He had always loved another, a woman he could not have, legally. Mor resigned herself several years ago to the fact that she would never know love. She loved her daughters and they loved her back but she would never experience the love of a man. Most days Mor remained in her sleeping chamber to escape the nightmare that was her life. The King and Queen had separate sleeping chambers so the king could entertain whomever he chose.

snapshot_52d94a94_f2e11afb.jpg

Mor did try on occasion to talk with Dermott, but this day turned out to be the wrong day. After hearing the news about the proposed exile, Mor was the last person Dermott wanted to see.

“Dermott would you like to go for a walk around the palace? The sun is out and this room is so cold and stuffy.” She asked in a hopeful tone.

Dermott looked at her with his dagger eyes and replied, “Don’t you know what is going on? Do you not know that our lives lie in the balance? We are in danger of losing everything and you want to go for a walk?”

“It might help you to relax and calm down, that is why I suggested it.” She sadly answered with tears ready to burst at any moment.

snapshot_52d94a94_d2e11d72.jpg

Mor was always crying. She felt she had nothing to live for. At one time she was an elegant princess surrounded by royal young men. She had her pick of all the single, future kings and nobleman. Dermott was the one her father chose. She knew at once that he wasn’t ‘the one’. He was quiet, stodgy and much older than her but her father King O’Toole thought he had the most potential. When she was young she would see him at a banquet or a ball and he wouldn’t be trying for her attention he would be staring at Norah Gilbert O’Rourke, future wife of King O’Rourke. She was promised to King O’Rourke while she was very young but she had had a history with Dermott which furtively continued for years until O’Rourke had found out. Mor was also made aware of his ongoing relationship with Norah. She called it a relationship because it was not merely a physical affair, it was love. A love Mor could never reverse and a love that he would never give up.

Chapter 3

Urlachen was a stunning princess and the youngest daughter of Dermott and Mor. She was beautiful and admired throughout the kingdoms so much so that Mor was reminded of herself when she was that age. Urlachen was remarkably exquisite and she was a kind soul, a rare combination in many young women, especially royal young women. She had long blonde hair and striking eyes and she was quite intelligent. She was also promised to a young prince Donnel MOR O’Brien of Thomand. Donnel was a fine man and would be a great king someday, it was a perfect match.

Her sister Aoiffe was of equal beauty but with more of a spunky personality. Aoiffe was cute, Urlachen was elegant. Dermott hadn’t found an intended husband for Aoiffe yet, he was waiting for the ideal merger. She was the firstborn daughter of a king; she would get nothing less than the best according to Dermott’s plans.

Later that day Urlachen was walking through the gardens waiting for Donnel to arrive for their weekly dinner together. As she waited she noticed how truly breathtaking the castle grounds were, so green and rich with vegetation. She wondered if her palace would be as spectacular. If it wasn’t exactly how she had imagined it she would work diligently to create the magnificent home of her dreams for their future children. She couldn’t wait to have babies. She and Donnel made many plans for their family right here in this garden, she couldn’t wait for her new life to begin.

snapshot_52d94a94_72e25f7a.jpg

As she rounded the corner she heard whispering. She couldn’t help but sneak a peek; it was probably Claire and Desmond, the cook and the chamber servant. They were always sneaking around the grounds looking to be alone. As Urlachen looked quietly around the corner she saw that it was Aoiffe and Finn, one of her father’s knights.

“Why is she with him?” She thought, eager to see more. She knew she shouldn’t spy on them but it was the only way she could find out what was going on.

“Why is she holding his hand? Now he is hugging her!!” she thought loudly to herself.

She stepped into clear view and with her hands on her hips she demanded to know what they were doing.

snapshot_52d94a94_32dd12af.jpg

“Aoiffe!!” Urlachen yelled in a desperate whisper.

A startled Finn released Aoiffe at once and she began to explain in the simplest terms.

“We weren’t doing anything out of the ordinary. Finn and I have been together for a long time now and you need to pretend you didn’t see anything.” Aoiffe answered indignantly.

She didn’t see why it should be a secret from her own sister. Urlachen had someone to love so why wouldn’t she be happy for me? Aoiffe thought while walking over to a stunned Urlachen. Finn tried to come along with her but she urged him to stay back and let her deal with this developing problem, a problem that may in fact get more distressing.

“Urlachen, you need to be my sister now and accept this without telling anyone. We have been together for a long time and we intend to stay that way. We love each other.” Aoiffe beged softly.

“What about Father…he will kill Finn, you know he will. He will never allow this. Please Aoiffe think about what you are doing!” Urlachen pleaded with an earnest concern for her sister.

“Don’t tell anyone and everything will be fine. We’ll do what we have to do. Father isn’t going to take him from me! I didn’t ask to be first born. We’ll leave the kingdom if we have to.” Aoiffe admitted hoping it wouldn’t come to that.

“This is absurd. Of course I will keep your secret but you aren’t thinking logically. Please think about this, I don’t want you to leave. The longer this goes on the more you are going to hurt when it ends.” Urlachen replied knowing she was just wasting her words.

“It won’t end, it can’t.” Aoiffe said in a bold yet meek voice.

The Heart of a King (ch.4)

irelandmap.jpg

The Royal Family of Leinster

Chapter 4

The day had come for Dermott to seek revenge on his rival King Teirnan O’Rourke. He would strike where it would hurt him the most, O’Rourke’s wife Norah. Dermott knew in his heart that Norah would do anything he asked her to do. She loved Dermott and had always longed to be with him, but instead she was trapped behind the castle doors of a man she didn’t love. Dermott had always loved her too but would never admit it now that he was a powerful King. Dermott cared about his family too but marriage to him was a strategic merger of two families to create a more powerful monarchy. Mor was good to him and she was an above average mother but he never felt the desire that he had experienced with Norah. When he was young he and Norah had shared their first love together. He often found himself reminiscing back to his carefree days of a young prince in love.

snapshot_52d94a94_f2e4a9b4.jpg

Dermott and Norah would spend their days riding horses throughout the countryside exploring the kingdoms of County Clare. Some days they would walk for miles hand in hand over the hills of green carpet and scattered stones. On occasion it would start to rain and they would find shelter in a grassy cave or an abandoned dwelling. Those were the times he remembered most, the days and nights they shared their most intimate moments.

Flashback

snapshot_32e4b199_92e4ba2f.jpg

She was perfect and he loved her with all of his soul but it was not fated for them to share their lives. Norah’s father had chosen O’Rourke to be her husband, not Dermott. The day he was told of this union changed his life forever. His heart would never be the same. From that day forward he chose hatred over love, power and fortune over happiness. He could still have her, they had ways of fulfilling this need but she would never be completely his.

Urlachen and her prince (ch. 4 cont’d)

(Ch. 4 continued)

That evening Urlachen had a visitor. Prince Donnel O’Brien of Thomand came for a private dinner with Urlachen. He was her intended husband. They didn’t know when they would be married, it was up to the fathers, but they were anxiously anticipating the day they would be told. Donnel was a good man for Urlachen. He was very Irish looking complete with red hair and fair skin, and although he wasn’t strapping and valiant like Finn, he carried himself like a gentleman. He was rather thin and preferred books over sport and Urlachan loved that about him. Together they talked about philosophy and religion and never did they have a moment of silence. There was quite a physical magnetism between them both as well but they resolved to keep this in check until vows were said. They often spoke about the family they would have soon. It was extremely vital that the children be educated by the finest governess and pursue education through whatever avenue they chose, academy or the Church. They both reflected on a life of servitude to God as a righteous and noble path.

snapshot_52d94a94_12e62d1d1.jpg

After an affectionate greeting they sat together in the dining room. Urlachen decided to confide in him the situation she had learned about Aoiffe and Finn.

“I would have never known! They hid it so well.” Donnel whispered loudly while being somewhat amused by a scandal in the works. However he reminded himself that this was his future sister in law and Urlachen loved her sister deeply.

“I don’t know what they are planning to do. She mentioned leaving the kingdom if it was their only alternative.” Urlachen replied sadly imagining life without her sister.

snapshot_52d94a94_12e62f301.jpg

“Are you going to stop her? You can always tell your Mother, she would change her mind.” He said without thinking of her loyalty to her sister.

“She swore me to secrecy and if my mother tells my father Finn would definitely be removed from the palace and perhaps the kingdom as well. She would never forgive me for that.” Urlachen answered with a defeated look on her face. She brightened up and asked Donell curiously, “What would you do if it were our daughter?”

Donnel paused while thinking of what his truest response would be. “I suppose it would depend on the man. If he wasn’t of royal blood or nobility I would have to choose my next step wisely.” He then added quickly, “I would not absolutely forbid it but I also wouldn’t let her be joined with an uneducated peasant. Finn has worked hard his whole life to be where he is today. Your Father should take that into consideration.”

Urlachen looked pleased with his response and replied with a life-size grin.

“Urlachen please don’t take offense at what I am about to say about your Father. When I am King I will govern the way my Father does, with fairness. Your father rules with an iron fist and I am surprised the Nobles are putting up with it. Lord MacNamara told my father that the taxes are so high in his region that he has a hard time collecting from the peasants. Most of them are just farmers and your father demands much of their crops as well. Peasants are people too, they deserve to live each day not worrying if they are going to be able to feed their children the next day. No, I am going to do things the right way, the way God would expect me to.” Donnel announced assuredly.

As he prepared to leave Urlachen met him by the fireplace.

“That is why I love you so much Donnel O’Brien.” She whispered as she offered him a sweet goodbye.

The Discovery (ch.5)

irelandmap.jpg

Chapter 5

When evening arrived so did the frogs. It would soon be spring so the frogs that resided on the palace grounds were in perfect form. Aoife and Finn had agreed to meet on the west side of the gardens just so they could take in the sounds of spring arriving and of course to be alone. Being near the kitchen, Aoife inhaled the sweet smell of the herbs and flowers in the garden starting to come to life again.

They were pretty sure everyone had retired for the night since it was nearing midnight. It was very dark outside even with the moon glow and the two sad torches that burned nearby. Upon seeing each other they embraced. Aoiffe didn’t restrain herself while in Finn’s arms, she knew he would be leaving in the morning with her Father and she would have to wait patiently for his return.

snapshot_52d94a94_f2e52483.jpg

“I’ll miss you Aoife.” Finn whispered gently as he tightened his hold on her body.

“We never get enough time together. As soon as you arrive home it is time to leave again.” Aoife replied holding back the tears.

“When I get back promise me that we will make plans to be married. I can’t wait any longer to be with you as my wife. I want the world to know! Your sister knows and that is a start. Promise me you will consider me speaking with your father, maybe while on this journey I can talk with him subtly and get an idea of what his reaction would be.” Finn pleaded.

“Finn did you forget who my father is? He will be furious with you and if he says no it is final. He may even make you leave the palace. I could never chance that happening.”Aoife said

“I have been his loyal servant since I was 14 and I have lived here since I was 7! I have fought beside him, he respects me. There is a good chance that he will give me your hand, you aren’t promised yet which is another favorable point. I am ready to face him; I want nothing more than to start our life together with or without his blessing.” Finn spoke these words like the bold soldier he was.

Aoife wrapped her young arms around his neck and with that Finn held her closer. After he kissed her he looked into her eyes and proposed something he had never had the courage to ask before.

“Aoife spend the night with me tonight.” Finn asked looking for an answer in her eyes. Let me hold you from the moment we lie down until the sun breaks.”

snapshot_52d94a94_d2e5267e.jpg

“How could we manage that?” She answered feeling somewhat embarrassed and nervous simultaneously. “Someone would find out, I don’t have privacy here.” She paused and said shyly,” I didn’t know you were thinking such things. I always imagined us waiting until our wedding night.”

“I have always wanted you, I was waiting for the right moment to come and I felt that this was that moment.” He explained seriously without any hesitation. “I could meet you in your room later, no one will be awake, and then sneak out before dawn. Please give me this gift before I leave you tomorrow and when I return we will have the answers we need to begin our lives together.”

Aoife wanted to say yes. She had felt the same desires he had been feeling for quite some time now but she was afraid. She was not afraid to be with Finn, she trusted him and new it would be a magical moment. She was afraid of her father. If someone saw them together in her chamber they would talk to her mother and she might tell to her father.

“Finn I would love to say yes, there is nothing more I would want but I was raised to believe that it is a sin before marriage, I know we will be married someday soon but I made a promise to myself. Aside from that what if I should become pregnant? My father would find out and it would be a chaos. Whether I like it or not I am the daughter of a Chieftain and I must adhere to at least some standards. We should wait until we have been blessed in a church.” Aoife didn’t want to disappoint him but even if she were willing to set aside her values she didn’t think it was the right time to take such a chance.

“I understand.” Finn said firmly. “I love you and I will wait. Yes I am disappointed but I wasn’t completely sure of it myself. I am sorry I put pressure on you, I understand your reasons completely. You are worth the wait.” He smiled at her staring directly into her divine eyes of blue.

He was disappointed more than he was letting on. He was nearing 22 years of age and he felt the strain of not having the woman he loved completely every time he was with her.

window-shot.jpg

As they stood together in the garden they didn’t realize that someone was still awake in the palace. King Dermott was restless and was deciphering his plans for the next day’s action. He wandered into the west hall and through the window noticed two figures standing outside. He could barely see by the light of the moon so he stood closer to the window.

window-king.jpg

He drew back his breath when he saw that it was his eldest daughter Aoife in a tight embrace with Finn Archid, his own soldier! Could I be seeing this right? He asked himself in a state of confusion and awe. How could this be? She knows she is predestined for someone of my choosing. Am I the only one who doesn’t know about this? He felt his rage rising.

—————————————————————————————————–

On the other side of the castle Queen Mor lay asleep in her large bed made of feathers and heavy blankets. She was awakened by a noise she had heard throughout the night. She thought it could be a cat roaming the palace grounds but as the sound persisted and seemed to get louder she decided to find out what it was.

snapshot_52d94a94_12eedf19.jpg

As she walked through the east hall she commented to herself about the dampness of the castle. She could feel the coldness of the stone permeating through her stocking shoe and without the warmth of her fireplace she was quite uncomfortable. She hurriedly walked to the kitchen where she was sure she would find the source of the sound. She was pleased to see that the kitchen fireplace was still stoked and stood by for a moment to collect its warmth.

snapshot_52d94a94_d2eee12e.jpg

Mor heard the noise again, it was a high shrill sound which resembled a baby crying. There are no babies in this palace she thought walking directly towards one of the cook’s chambers. Before opening the heavy wooden door she listened and again heard a baby’s cry. As she bolted through the door demanding to know why this baby was disturbing her sleep, the servant looked petrified.

snapshot_52d94a94_72e63519.jpg

“Who is this baby and why is it here?” Mor demanded.

“I am sorry your majesty. I beg your forgiveness. This is not my baby but I am afraid she is my responsibility.” The servant girl answered fearing that she would be ordered out of the palace.

“Then explain who this baby belongs to and why you are responsible.” The queen asked curiously yet firmly.

snapshot_52d94a94_92eee4f4.jpg

“A young servant girl, who also toils in your kitchen such as I, left the baby here and ran away, she is without a husband and was destitute. She had no means to take care of the baby and no family to look upon for help. I took the baby in from the cold and tried to keep her quiet in my chamber until morn. I was going to seek advice from Claire your cook, I felt she would know what to do. I am sorry your majesty for I did not mean to wake you and I will leave with the baby now and find help elsewhere.” The servant girl cried in fear of losing her job and residence here at the palace.

“We needn’t be hasty in our decisions. You say this baby is an orphaned peasant child? Does she have a name and do we know when the baby was birthed?” The Queen asked as she looked into the eyes of this helpless child whose future seemed uncertain. Mor quickly realized that the baby must be cold and should be kept in blankets.

“I think she is but a few days and I don’t know of any name. I don’t have the means to feed her and I fear she may be sick.” The servant answered handing the infant to the Queen who at this point was greatly interested in the well being of the babe.

As Mor held the baby unrealized emotions poured out of her soul. She smiled internally and felt elated at the thought of a newborn infant needing her care. The babe was beautiful and her blue eyes shone directly into the queen’s neglected heart. She decided at that moment that she would take the baby as her own.

snapshot_52d94a94_92eee344.jpg

“You know the rules of this palace. The troubles of any servant are not to be of any bother to the royal family. Taking this baby into the palace is grounds for removal.” The Queen said instinctively to the young servant girl who then collapsed onto the ground in a state of desperation.

snapshot_52d94a94_b2eee2ad.jpg

“Please do not send me away. I need to be here, this is all I have. I am a young widow and have no where else to live. Our farm was taken by my husband’s brother and I was taken in here to labor. I only brought the baby here to keep her warm. I didn’t mean to wake you and involve you in any way.” The girl cried with extreme anxiety.

The Queen felt such joy in her heart that she couldn’t bear to be unkind to her any longer.

“Ok this infraction will be overlooked. I see that you are of a kind heart and have done well by this child. You are to be commended and I will see to it that you are. I will take over the care of this child and leave you to your chamber.” The queen said in a stately tone even though she was overly grateful that this servant had brought the baby into her life.

As the Queen quickly walked back to her chambers she realized that her life changed the moment she looked into the child’s eyes. She would love and protect this child and in turn the baby would give the queen a reason to embrace each day with the fullness of life. She would now have a reason to smile each morning.

snapshot_52d94a94_f2ef036b.jpg

After many moments of holding the baby and making many a promise to her, Mor realized that she would have to tell King Dermott of her decision to keep the orphaned infant. She decided that no matter what he said she would raise the baby as if she were her very own and give her all the love she could give. This discovery gave her a new beginning.

Mission of the heart (ch.6)

Chapter 6

It was the middle of the night when King Dermott, Finn and the two other chosen knights prepared their horses for Dermott’s secret mission. Finn and the others did not know what they would be doing yet but the stern, unforgiving voice of the King led him to believe it was a deed that might save the kingdom. As they rode into the darkness they stopped an hour later so that the king could brief his men. They let the horses rest and the king explained his deceitful plan. Finn couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

snapshot_52d94a94_d3001d74.jpg

“Men I have chosen you three because you are the most trustworthy of all my guards. What we are doing will show King O’Rourke that he cannot interfere with my right to rule as a God anointed King. He has agreed to the orders to have me exiled from my own kingdom only because of the ill blood between us. Today he will regret he ever mentioned my name. In an hour from now we will be taking a prisoner…Queen O’Rourke, the king’s wife. This will not be a hostile kidnapping as she has agreed to come willingly.” The King said with a sly smile avoiding looking into Finn’s eyes for he knew if he did he would explode with anger and questions about what he saw in the garden the evening before.

“He has lost his mind!” Finn thought. “This will surely start a bloody war. Kidnapping another man’s wife, a king’s wife at that! Especially since they have been engaged in an adulterous affair for years. The king has surely stepped over the edge.”

“We will enter from the back and if we are confronted by guards, do what is necessary. The queen will be waiting in the stables and will ride with me. You are to guide our escape. Have you any questions?” Dermott asked impatiently.

There was a long silence, no one dared to speak.

“Let’s go then.” He yelled as he climbed on the back of his mare.

Finn was hoping to find a few minutes to bring up the situation of asking for Aoife’s hand in marriage but thought the timing was off. The king was focused on only the next few hours that lay ahead. He then realized that after tonight there would be a war with much bloodshed and he may not get another chance to speak to the king.

“King may I address you with a question?” Finn asked as he rode alongside the king’s horse.

“Of course you may Finn.” The King said bitingly.

“I was wondering what your plans were for Aoife? Have you found a suitor or perhaps looking for one?” Finn asked quickly with a hint of boldness.

“Why do you ask this of me Finn?” Of course the King knew why he was asking but he wanted to taunt Finn before blasting the finality of his answer.

“Well I have known Aoife for a long time and we have developed a friendship that could very well lead to courtship if you would give us your permission.” Finn replied eagerly awaiting the answer.

“Why should I allow someone not born of royalty or nobility to marry my daughter? You were left with Lord O’Flattery as the orphan of a peasant. You have no rights to such a highly valued wife.” King Dermott proclaimed sardonically.

Finn felt his face redden with heat.” Your majesty, I have proved myself worthy! I have fought to be where I am today and worked harder than anyone else. I am the youngest knight to hold such a high standing within your kingdom. Please consider me! I could make her happy!” He yelled respectfully.

“Happy? She will be happy with whomever I choose. She knows of her exalted position and what it can do for our kingdom. The answer is no and be done with it.” Dermott said coldly and rode off ahead of Finn.

Finn was angry. The King didn’t care about his daughter’s happiness, only her status. Finn knew in his heart that they would be together, there was no way Aoife would wed someone she didn’t love.

As they approached the back entrance to King O’Rourke’s palace, there were no signs of guards or any of the staff. It was so late everyone was most likely asleep, even the guard who shouldn’t have been. The King rode toward the stables on the west side and his men watched the area.

When King Dermott saw Norah O’Rourke standing in the shadows he was spellbound. It had been a few years since they were together and she still looked magnificent. He couldn’t wait to reach her. As he walked to her they embraced and then only stared at each other.

snapshot_52d94a94_13001efb.jpg

“Are you sure you want to do this Norah?” Dermott asked for a final time.

“I am sure. I have missed you Dermott. The years I have spent here have been wasted. I have always only wanted to be with you. I must say I am surprised at how much time has aged us.” The Queen answered wholeheartedly.” What about Mor? What have you done about her?”

“She will be fine. We have only a marriage of paper and she is aware of that. I have had my chamber servant make up a room for you close to mine on the third floor of the castle. You will have your own servants and every need met. When this whole ordeal is over we will decide then what will be done.” The King then whispered “I am very happy to have you Norah.”

snapshot_52d94a94_53001f70.jpg

The kidnapping took place without incident and the group rode back toward their land. King O’Rourke wouldn’t know anything until he awoke the next morning and Dermott was very satisfied about that. As they rode toward home dawn was approaching and Finn had a chance to have a look at the Queen he had heard so much about from Aoife. She was riding with Dermott and she looked pleased. Finn thought of what Queen Mor’s reaction would be. He knew the history of the two royals and thought to himself that tomorrow the king would have two wars on his hands. One inside the palace, and one outside.

A Queen’s heartache (ch.7)

Chapter 7/ MacMurrough

When King Dermott and his party arrived back at the castle the sun was barely up. They secured the horses and Finn and the other men went to their sleeping quarters for some much needed rest. Finn wanted to see Aoife but was hesitant to face her after the unsuccessful conversation with her father. He was also sworn to secrecy about the mission and didn’t think he could hold his tongue about the despicable actions committed last night. This certainly would turn the castle upside down. She would soon find out and he was sure she would be heartbroken knowing her father had brought this woman who had caused the family so much pain into the castle right under her mother’s nose. He would see Aoife later in the morning, for now he needed sleep especially if the coming days were to be as bad as he expected.

King Dermott brought Norah into the castle by way of the kitchen. Several cooks and servants were busy preparing the days meals. As the king walked by with Norah they all stopped to make their bow and stared at the strange woman.

snapshot_52d94a94_b3018eba1.jpg

“Carry on all of you and return to your duties.” He yelled in a distracted tone.

After they had left the buzz in the kitchen moved like wildfire throughout the castle. The castle steward was told and he knew it would be only a matter of time before the Queen Mor would hear the news.

snapshot_52d94a94_330189b7.jpg

“I hope you will be comfortable here my dear Norah.” Dermott said to her as he brought her into a lavishly furnished chamber.

There were elegant tapestries, expensive rugs, and many books for her to enjoy. The room was warmed by a beautiful fireplace built of stone and mortar. The bed was very large and looked extremely comfortable. After her perilous night she was exhausted and couldn’t wait to sleep.

“It is most beautiful Dermott, I know I will be happy here, especially with you just a few doors away.” She replied flirtatiously.

“Please let me know right away when you get word from my husband and let it be known what his intentions are. I worry for you, he will seige the castle and bring others as allies.” Norah spoke in a whispered tone.

“I have sent word to King O’Lochlain of Tirowen and he is aware of our position. He will ready his army and assist when needed. My men are readying themselves also. We are stocking our provisions but I am most assured that this will be short lived. The Chieftains will realize that this is my land to rule and retract their order to exile. It may only be a war of words.” Dermott said this calmly and with confidence.

“I will send for your servants and they shall help clean you up so you may rest comfortably. I will have someone bring up your personal belongings as well. If you look out your window you will see that you have a view of the garden and beyond that you can see the whole of the valley. I must go and meet with my advisors and the constable to make plans for the coming days. If you need me send a message with a servant and I will be here as soon as I can. I will be back later.” Dermott said as he leaned to her and kissed her softly.

———————————————————————————————————————–

Queen Mor awoke the next morning with a smile. The sounds of the new baby girl in her life made her anxious to get out of bed and start the day. She had retired very late the night before for she had so much to do to create a comfortable new life for the newborn. She woke the servants, chamber maids, and her ladies in waiting. Everyone was busy making accommodations for the babe. The palace Doctor was called and he gave the baby a clean bill of health provided she would be given excellent nourishment to increase her weight. After much searching the servants found a beautiful bassinet that most assuredly was Urlachen’s when she was a baby. Linens, makeshift clothes, and a wet nurse were located as well. Mor wanted the baby to be close to her so she had the bassinet placed in her chamber with the nurse close by.

The newborn had been bathed and fed already when Mor awoke so when the nurse brought the baby to her she was able to just sit with her by the fire and cherish her. Mor couldn’t wait to tell Aoife and Urlachen the news, she knew they would love her as soon as they saw her. She had sent for them when she awoke and expected them any minute. Mor then thought of how she would tell Dermott. She knew he had important business the night before and wasn’t even aware if he was in the castle. She would wait until later to find out, why spoil a perfect morning? She thought.

snapshot_52d94a94_92ef019c.jpg

When Urlachen and Aoife had finished dressing they walked to their mother’s chamber to find the reason for the early invitation. As they walked in they saw their mother holding a newborn baby, they were both excited and inquisitive.

“Mother! Whose baby is that?” Aoife yelled as she ran to get a better look.

Urlachen also hurried to her side and said enthusiastically, “She is beautiful! Who does she belong to?”

“She is mine dear girls.” Mor answered with a slow grin. This is the moment she had waited for all morning.

“What in heaven do you mean Mother?” Urlachen asked as she took the baby into her own arms.

“Mother please explain.” Aoife ordered respectfully yet impatiently.

“Last night a servant girl had her in the sleeping chambers and explained that the babe was an orphan. The mother left her and I have decided to keep her as my own.” Mor clarified nonchalantly.

“Mother how can you do that? Does father know? Don’t you want to know more about her background?” Urlachen asked as she handed the newborn to Aoife.

snapshot_52d94a94_d306f060.jpg

Look at how beautiful her eyes are. She is the most lovely baby girl I have ever seen.” Aoife said as she entertained the baby with funny grins.

“I don’t see any reason why I can’t. Your father doesn’t know yet but he will have to honor my wishes. I have already sent a messenger out to find information about her relations and to find out if she has been properly baptized.” Mor answered.

“You’re getting older mother, how will you manage?” Urlachen asked seriously.

snapshot_52d94a94_9306ee2b.jpg

“I have plenty of help as you can see. This will be good for me, you girls will be leaving soon to marry and I will be lonely without you. She will keep me busy. She needs me and I need her.” Mor said as she took the baby back into her arms.

“How old is she and what is her name?” Aoife asked.

“The Doctor thinks she is 3 months old, she is smaller than usual because she hasn’t received proper nourishment. I was hoping you girls could help me pick a name.” Mor replied smiling.

snapshot_52d94a94_130195fa.jpg

“Your majesty…may I speak with you privately?” Mor’s personal chamber servant asked her from the door

“Of course Brigid. Whatever is the matter?” Mor asked as she walked over to her.

Brigid stood there ringing her hands with nervous energy and Mor could tell something was wrong.

“Your majesty, please forgive the interruption but there is a matter of urgent concern that I am certain you would want to know.” Brigid explicated quickly.

snapshot_52d94a94_3306f5c3.jpg

“Go on Brigid, I am listening.” Mor asked with curiosity.

“There is word around the castle that the King has arrived back from his expedition. I am afraid to say that he has someone with him. It is believed that this person is Queen O’Rourke of Breifne. She is staying here in the castle.” Brigid explained in one breath.

Mor was silent for a minute. Aoife and Urlachen stood by anxiously awaiting the news Brigid had brought to their mother. They strained to hear the conversation and when they heard the name mentioned they were both horrified. They knew how their mother would feel, her heart would break once again.

snapshot_52d94a94_1306f7c9.jpg

“Are you sure Brigid? She was seen here today?” Mor asked sadly.

“Yes your majesty, they were both seen coming into the kitchen together by the staff. He has set up a room for her on the fourth floor. That is all that I know. Forgive me for being the bearer of this terrible information. I will leave you now with your daughters.” Brigid said sorrowfully as she backed out of the room respectfully bowing to the queen.

snapshot_52d94a94_3306ff0b.jpg

Mor couldn’t believe what she just heard. She was mortified, humiliated, and despondent.

She stood there for a moment and thought of what a horrible man he was. “How could he do this to me? What kind of a man causes so much heartache and then has the disrespect of bringing the cause of it into my home? Mor was beyond tears. She had forgotten that Aoife and Urlachen were in the room. They walked to her and could only hug her for they knew this would be final blow to their Mother.

snapshot_52d94a94_3306fa3f.jpg

With that Mor began to cry. She held on to Urlachen for dear life.“How can he do this to me? How can I walk about my home amongst the likes of her? What kind of a woman leaves her husband and moves into a married man’s home? I cannot go on like this. I want to kill him for all the pain he has caused me.

What am I to do now?” She asked her girls with the innocence of a child.

A daughter’s plea. (ch.8)

Royal family of Leinster

Chapter 8/ MacMurrough

The king sat at his table waiting for his advisors to come to discuss the details and strategy of the conflict to come. He had made a few decisions on the ride back to the castle the previous night. To gain favor with the King of Thomand Dermott decided to proceed with the marriage of Urlachen to his son, Thomand’s Prince Donnel O’Brien . He had been putting it off to wait for a good opportunity and this seemed as good as any. He would tell them both this afternoon. He also thought of what to do about Finn and Aoife. He needed to speak with her as well to set her straight about her future obligations as the eldest and he would have to warn Finn about overstepping his boundaries. He was a good man and under different circumstances he may have agreed to the match but Aoife was too valuable to allow her to be united with just anyone.

snapshot_52d94a94_930772a1.jpg

The king’s two advisors walked in and snapped Dermott out of his thoughts. They were late and he would certainly remind them.

“Where have you been? I have been waiting here for several minutes! I don’t have time to wait.” The king yelled.

“Beg your pardon your majesty, we had some business to discuss with the constable. It won’t happen again.” The balding advisor reassured the king.

“So what is the word? Have we received any messengers from O’Rourke yet?” Asked the king.

The younger of the two consultants replied, “Yes we have your majesty. They gave notice of their intentions to attack if demands are not met. O’Rourke wants the queen returned and he wants your immediate withdrawal from
Leinster. He demands this be done within 3 days. You have only three days to comply.”

snapshot_52d94a94_130193181.jpg

“Quite amusing wouldn’t you say? We anticipated this exact response, so much for originality.” The king said with amusement.

“What do you plan to do your majesty? We don’t have enough provisions for all of the inhabitants of the castle for more than a few weeks. They could prolong this for much longer than that. Perhaps we should attack first with O’Brien and O’Lochlain supporting us. That way he won’t take our lands and we won’t starve.” The older advisor suggested.

snapshot_52d94a94_9306f1ab.jpg

“We will gain many more casualties that way sir, we need to plan this wisely. Maybe a truce with some compromises your majesty?” The younger advisor asked.

“NO! I will not compromise! I will stay in my land and I will keep his queen. We have more men and we are equipped better. I will let you know this evening whether I decide to attack or wait for his surrender. For now ready the soldiers and animals for battle and add men to the garrison. Check on the provisions again and see to it that you find a way to stock it fully. Be gone, there is much to do.” The king bellowed.

“Oh and have the steward send for Prince O’Brien and for my daughter Urlachen at once.” The king said in a more relaxed tone.

————————————————————————————————————————-

Urlachen was furious when she got word that her father wished to see her. She was disgusted by his actions and didn’t quite know what she would say when she saw him. She had to remain respectable but felt that it may be impossible. Why should she, she thought. He had no respect for anyone and she would be leaving the castle soon anyway, so she went into the room with a defiant attitude which wasn’t her nature. The room was cold and dark, much like her father she thought. When she looked at him she felt sick to her stomach. There had been talk of other despicable acts he had committed but this time was different, she felt this was personal and unforgivable.

snapshot_52d94a94_f3098c87.jpg

“Come in Urlachen. I need to talk with you about something important.” Dermott said quickly.“I already know father. I must say that I am shocked and…I really don’t know what to say.” She replied with her eyes cast downward in shame.

“How could you know? I only made up my mind this morning.” A confused Dermott asked.

snapshot_52d94a94_d30702c6.jpg

“How could you do this to all of us? We all know who that woman is, especially Mother.” She said angrily.

“Now Urlachen, I think…” Dermott tried to interrupt as he realized the source of her anger.

“You said vows to each other! How could you break them so easily?” Urlachen yelled with contempt.

“That matter is none of your business, in fact that is not the reason I called for you, I shouldn’t have to explain anything to anyone. I am your Father and I am king!” Dermott yelled unable to intimidate his youngest daughter.

snapshot_52d94a94_93099285.jpg

“I think it is horrid what you have done to Mother! It is terrible that you have kept this woman in your life, but to bring your lover here to live is shameful.” She said trying to control the tears that were welling.

snapshot_52d94a94_7309916b.jpg

A moment passed between them of cold silence.

Dermott was infuriated at the thought of his daughter questioning his actions and insulting him. For a moment he wanted to strike her but couldn’t bring himself to do it. Urlachen had always been special to him. She was so well behaved and polite. He was so proud of the woman she was becoming. After listening to what she said he felt this emotional outburst was justified and he was impressed that she was strong enough to call him on it.

“Urlachen I realize why you are angered. You don’t understand the ways of the world yet, especially when you are in an exalted position. You do what you have to do. I was cheated in my marriage arrangement. I was meant for another and had to sacrifice for the good of the kingdom. Most royal subjects forfeit happiness for duty. You are different, I found you a husband that will fit you, unlike your sister. She will need to marry for duty not for compatibility. Do you understand anything that I am saying?” Dermott asked his tearful daughter.

snapshot_52d94a94_f307045e1.jpg

Urlachen was torn. She never heard her father speak in such a way, he sounded more like a human than a monster. He was selfish in his actions and was wrong for bringing the woman to their home, but she could understand his longing to be happy.

“You aren’t being fair to mother. Your desires to be with this woman are killing her. If you are so bitter about your marriage arrangement, why would you force Aoife to suffer the same the same way? Why wouldn’t you look for someone she could love?” She pleaded softly.

“Duty. It is her duty as the firstborn to sacrifice for our kingdom. She may be joined with someone she will eventually learn to love. Now for the real reason I called you here.” He said as he rubbed his hands together and smiled.

“I have decided to set your wedding date for Sunday. I know it is short notice but there is an urgent situation at hand that requires us to expedite the ceremony. I have called the prince here also to discuss the details. His father has informed him this morning as well. He should be here momentarily.” He said trying to figure out why she was looking at him with an odd look on her face.

So are you pleased?” He asked her with a confused look.

“Am I being married now because of the approaching conflict? I heard about it and I have to say father that I am scared and appalled that you would danger us all for this woman.” Urlachen replied.

“This war did not start because of her. Do not worry, the kingdom will be fine and you will be a married woman in your own castle in your new kingdom. Thomand is a fine land with a good king and an excellent prince. You should be delighted Urlachen.” Dermott said with a knowing smile.

snapshot_52d94a94_f30b196c.jpg

“I am Father, I have waited so long for this but I am still angry and I cannot accept what you are doing. I cannot be happy while Mother is so unhappy. Can’t you send her back Father? It would ease mother’s pain and bring to a halt this disagreement between you and King O’Rourke. I can then be joyfully married with my family and friends present and the whole kingdom can celebrate the occasion. Please reconsider Father.” Urlachen pleaded with emotional fervor, all the while clasping her hands almost begging the king.

“It’s already done Urlachen. They want me exiled. I can’t reverse it I can only fight it. I have to remain strong and unchallenged.” Dermott replied with a sad tone.

At that moment a servant came into the room to announce the arrival of Donnel O’Brien. “Your majesty, he is riding into the palace gates now. Pardon the intrusion.” The servant said as he backed out of the room.

“Father, may I go to him? I know we have not completed our conversation and there is more I wish to discuss with you. Perhaps later we can meet to discuss the situation more.” Urlachen asked sternly. She didn’t want to show her father her excitement so she tried to be very serious. This problem wasn’t going away and she felt she was the only one who might be able to talk sense into him.

“Yes, go to your prince. If we are to be conversing on the topics in which we have already addressed than no, we will not meet later. If you would like we could discuss the wedding details, but we will not speak of the matters of the kingdom. Be gone! Go to your husband to be.” The king said with a small smile.

Urlachen ran to meet Donnel outside the courtyard and as they were in sight of one another they were joyous. Donnel secured his horse and rushed to embrace her.

snapshot_52d94a94_3308cab0.jpg

“I could not be happier my love.” He said quietly in her ear.

This was the moment they had waited for for so long. Urlachen wanted to be as happy as she should be but her mind drifted back to the confrontation with her father and her unsuccessful request. She thought to herself, how can I leave the kingdom with all that is happening?

A family torn apart (ch.9)

irelandmap2.jpg

Ch.9/MacMurrough Royal Family of Leinster

While walking to the east side of the castle Dermott saw his eldest daughter Aoife meandering around the pond. Most likely looking for Finn, he thought. He needed to speak with her about Finn and her future obligations as the eldest daughter of a king. He wasn’t sure how she would react to him after the turbulent conversation with Urlachen. Aoife most likely knew about Norah as well. He would be as quick as he had to be, he didn’t want to have to explain again why he chose to do what he did. He shouldn’t have to. Urlachen must have caught him at a weak moment. Aoife wouldn’t be so lucky.

As Aoife walked near the crystal blue pond she looked for her reflection in the water. There were lily pads obstructing her view, so she bent down and lightly pushed them on their way. She finally caught her reflection and the blue sky behind her. As she stared she thought of a time when things weren’t so tumultuous. She remembered herself as a child playing in this very pond with her sister. The days were simpler back then when she didn’t know how dreadful her father really was, he was just a big man who didn’t say much to her and was very busy. Coming to age brought harsh realizations about a world that was practically perfect. She longed to be young again.

“Aoife! May I have a word with you?” The king shouted across the court.

Aoife was surprised to see her father. His voice brought her back to her grim reality. She wasn’t ready to see him, but couldn’t walk away for that would anger him greatly. She begrudgingly walked toward him and spoke in a monotone voice.

snapshot_52d94a94_3308ceba.jpg

“Yes father, I have a moment to spare.” She said not making eye contact with him.

“Obviously you have heard the news. I first want to say that I will not be discussing that with you, so do not speak a word about it.” He said quickly and to the point.

“I don’t want to speak about it either.” She answered almost like a child would.

“I was looking for you because of the matter between you and Finn. I know what is going on and it needs to end

immediately.” Dermott spoke severely hoping she wouldn’t argue too much or question his demands.

“Father…how do you…why?” She spoke feeling the tears coming.

snapshot_52d94a94_5308cefc1.jpg

“Aoife I saw you and he together the other evening. You were exhibiting intimate behavior with him and before it goes too far it needs to stop. You are being saved for a worthwhile marriage. You have an obligation to this kingdom and I will see to it that you are matched with someone of greatness.” The king explained. He hated having to say this to her, but ultimately it would be the final course of action.

“I am with someone of greatness! Finn is a wonderful man and I love him!” She yelled in a fit of fury. “You are being unfair, especially after what you have done to mother!”

snapshot_52d94a94_f308cf3d.jpg

“I told you I don’t want to discuss that! The bottom line is that you must end the relationship with Finn or I will!” He yelled and with that he turned and walked away feeling slightly bad about what he had to do.

“You will do no such thing father! I will leave the kingdom if I have to!” She screamed as she ran off through the garden towards the stables.

Will this day never end? Dermott thought as he sighed and walked back through the court. He had one more meeting. He didn’t want to go through with it but he knew he had to. He was going to talk with Mor, his queen.

As he walked to her chamber he noticed many of the castle hands were subtly staring his way as he walked by. News travels so fast through this place, he thought.

As he approached her door he took a deep breath and walked in. He saw Mor standing by the fire looking miserable. He searched in his heart for some compassion for her, but it was vacant.

“Mor I need to speak with you.” He said quietly.

As she turned around to see him standing there at the door her heart sank. She looked down and shook her head.

“Well at least you had the decency to face me. How Dermott? How can you do this to me after all the years I have been your faithful wife?” Mor said these words with gritted teeth. She was beyond upset, she was in despair.

“Mor you have known all along. Our marriage was only a formality and I am sorry about that. You are a good mother and deserve more. I can’t give it to you.” Dermott replied sullenly.

snapshot_52d94a94_730bacbd.jpg

“Yes I have known about your relationship with her Dermott. I have tried to get past that, but to bring her here is wrong. I am humiliated. I can’t even leave my chamber.” Mor answered.

Just then the orphaned baby girl made a noise from her bassinet. Dermott glanced in her direction and asked, “Mor what is that? Is that a baby?”

“Yes Dermott. The other night, which seems like a long time ago, a servant had an orphaned baby in her chamber. I took responsibility for her and I am going to raise her. I was going to tell you and then all of this came about.” Mor answered in a defeated voice.

snapshot_52d94a94_130b459b.jpg

“You can’t keep a baby here in the castle. What do you know about this child?” He asked, shocked at this new revelation. Are you going to give her a royal standing? Have you thought about all of this?”

“Actually Dermott I can keep her and you are not telling me otherwise. You won’t be involved and I will deal with the legalities at a later date.” Mor spoke to him with a glare of disdain. “You have some decisions to make. I have decided that if you wish to keep Norah here in the castle I will have to leave.”

“What do you mean? Where would you live as comfortably as you do here? Be rational Mor.” Dermott said surprised to witness such a strong statement from her.

“Rational? That is the only rational solution I can think of. I can deal with your infidelities as long as I am not aware of them, I have submitted to that long ago. The girls will be leaving soon to begin their married lives and I do not see any reason to reside here as long as there is another woman taking my place.” Mor replied without wavering.

snapshot_52d94a94_530b443c.jpg

“Mor can’t you see what is going on here? I don’t have time for this now, the castle will be under siege in a matter of days.” Dermott asked impatiently.

“That is your doing. You caused this war and you could stop it if you want.” Mor replied.

“I will be exiled! Is that what you want?” Dermott screamed.

snapshot_52d94a94_530b4763.jpg

“I don’t know what I want anymore. Please leave me now Dermott. I am not feeling well.” She asked calmly.

After a moment of silence and a deep breath Dermott said quietly, “I also needed to inform you that Urlachen will be married Sunday. I decided this morning and the preparations are being made.”

With that he walked out of the door without looking back. He felt physically and mentally exhausted and couldn’t wait for the day to end. He ate his supper in his chamber and walked the 20 feet to Norah’s door. He had anticipated seeing her all day, but now he felt somewhat guilty. Maybe I don’t have a conscience like they said, he thought. He stood outside her door for a moment pondering the decisions he had made in the last few days. He then decided to put all thoughts out of his head and went inside to his beloved Norah.

A desperate Aiofe/The Wedding Day (ch.10)

Chapter 10/MacMurrough

A Desperate Aoife

Aoife was distraught. Her tear stained face felt cold in the late afternoon breeze. She needed to find Finn. After the meeting with her father, her state of mind was reckless, she would leave the castle for good right then if she could. She told herself she wouldn’t miss any of it. She would miss her mother, but Urlachen would be leaving soon anyway to start her new life. She felt she could just disappear and begin her life with Finn. She sat down on a log and imagined the two of them living happily, on a small farm perhaps. She wasn’t like Urlachen, she didn’t need to live a wealthy life in a castle. A comfortable home big enough for the children they would have would be very satisfying for Aoife.

As she waited for Finn to find her, which he always did, she lay down on some hay near the stables. She fell asleep from the exhaustion of crying and dreamt about her life with Finn.

snapshot_52d94a94_f300236b.jpg

When Finn finally found her he didn’t know that her father had spoken to her. He gently woke her and while still in a dreamlike state she grabbed and hugged him desperately. Finn noticed that she had been crying and asked her what had happened.

snapshot_52d94a94_93128bdd.jpg

“He knows Finn! He saw us the other night in the garden! He demanded that we end our association or he will!” Aoife said quickly through her tears.

“Did he mention that I tried to talk to him about us on the ride to Briefne? He gave me the same answer. I couldn’t change his mind.” Finn said desperately.

snapshot_52d94a94_33128b6a.jpg

“”Well, we will be over unless we do something. “ Aoife replied after calming herself with thoughts of how to overcome her father.

“I can’t do anything right now. We have a war beginning in a few days Aoife. Your father has begun something that could become horrifying. Do you know what is going on? I have been busy all day preparing for the attack by O’Rourke. They are going to siege the castle and your father is allowing it. While he waits out the siege, you will be trapped inside for what could be weeks. We have to defend the castle night and day and take out as many of O’Rourke’s men as we can, I am afraid it will be bloody but your father doesn’t think it will get that far. He has too much confidence in the ability of his men and the castle to defend itself. O’Rourke will attack with everything he has to get his wife back.

“You are scared aren’t you Finn?” She asked him while squeezing his cold hands.

“I am scared for you and your family. I wish I could take you away from all of this, but I can’t. The soldiers and everyone who lives here needs me.” Finn replied trying to choke down his own tears.

“Everything will be ok, we will be fine and when this is over we will leave together and never turn back.” She said in a hopeful but concerned manner.

“Did you hear that your sister is to be wed this Sunday? Your father just announced it. She will be leaving the castle just in time.” Finn declared.

“I haven’t heard of this. I must go congratulate her. My father has certainly made sure that her life is blissful. At least he intended that for one of us. Aoife replied.

“You will be blissful too. Like you said, after this is over we will both be happy. I am certain I can talk with Lord O’Flattery and aquire a small manor on his land, and I can ask to be put back with his men to defend his properties.” Finn said with a smile. “We have much to look forward to once we leave this place.”

“I am serious about my decision Finn. I will leave no matter what happens.” Aoife said as she hugged Finn tightly.

“I know you will. I need to get back my love. I don’t know how much I will see you in the coming days. Stay safe, and when you hear the trouble start, do what you need to do. I love you.” He said as he departed.

Aoife walked slowly to her chamber and cried the rest of the night.

The Wedding Day

Urlachen was a stunning bride. This was the moment she had waited years for. It was apparent that she couldn’t wait to start her life with Donnel, leave the castle and her father behind. The thought of distancing herself from her father brought a feeling of great comfort to her.

They had the ceremony at Corcomroe Abbey with Brother Flanagan, a Cistercian monk, presiding over the mass. The Abbey was built by the O’Brien clan years earlier for the monks brought from Inishlounagt. Another name for the Abbey was “St. Mary of the Fertile Rock’ the reason being that it was built near a lushly green limestone valley in County
Clare. This valley was a favorite place for riding horses when Urlachen and Aoife were younger and it held wonderful memories for them.

When the blessings were said and the mass was over the assembly moved outside for a celebratory feast of cider and ale, fruits, bread, and meats of all kinds. Many of the villagers were in attendance, and the peasants clamored outside to catch a glimpse of their beautiful princess Urlachen. There were cheers and well wishes sent from the mouths of the villagers. Urlachen felt honored and blessed.

Lord Timothy and Lady Slane DeBurgh were present, among the other nobles and merchants, and it was announced that they were expecting their first child. They had been childless for many years with many failed pregnancies, so this was considered a true blessing. Slane DeBurgh had a bright disposition and was extremely hopeful about this baby. Most of the day was spent discussing with the other woman, and anyone who would listen, about good habits and daily rituals of a healthy pregnancy. She was desperate for advice.

Recently widowed Lord Ennis O’Flattery was there with his two teenage children Coleman and Coblaith. Despite their mourning that seemed to be joyful, the teens especially. They were enjoying the entertainment and spent much of the time with friends of their own age.

A special invitation was given to the Donnely family, Michan and his daughter Almaith. He worked at the castle doing garden work and helped in the stables. Even though he was considered a peasant, Urlachen knew him to be a kind and helpful worker so she always made him feel welcome in her presence. She may have also felt sad for his situation. Michan had been widowed also and was raising his daughter with no help. She often wondered why he hadn’t tried to take a new wife as there were many single women in the villages.

During the course of the day Urlachen couldn’t help noticing that Patrick, one of the Abbey caretakers, talking with Almaith most of the day. They were of the same age and class and she looked just as interested in Patrick. Michan had taken notice as well.

Urlachen was surpised to see the Braden family there. Liam Braden was a wine merchant and was away most of the time. They recently gave birth to a newborn baby boy they named Froech, to join their 11 month old boy Colin. His wife Cloddagh had her hands full with the two boys but seemed very happy conversing amongst the guests, she did however look tired.

Donnel had been speaking to his childhood friend Eamon MacNamara a lot of the time. Eamon’s father had recently died and left him with most of his money and land holdings. He had been a wealthy wool merchant and contracted Ergotism, an illness that poisons the system due to a fungal infection in grain, on his last voyage to France a few weeks ago. Eamon didn’t show any signs of mourning or sadness, in fact he seemed to only be interested in the young females at the affair. Urlachen had heard from Donnel that he was to marry soon so she thought his behavior rather odd, especially at a public event.

Aoife was pleased that Urlachen insisted that Finn be invited. Her father resisted but Urlachen stood her ground. Aoife was grateful for it gave her and Finn time to see each other before the fight began between her Father and the O’Rourke clan. They met behind the Abbey and took advantage of their time alone. Aoife had avoided her father since the day they spoke and the whole day of the wedding.

The buzz about the upcoming conflict was heard throughout the day from all of the guests. Dermott reassured everyone, especially Lord DeBurgh and Lord O’Flattery, that it would be a short battle and wouldn’t affect the villages and estates. Dermott had demanded one condition from his enemy O’Rourke, that he not bother the surrounding areas. Long ago during a war between the two kingdoms, O’Rourke’s men had stolen and killed many of the cattle of
Leinster. Dermott was determined not to repeat that mistake.

As the day progressed to evening, each guest began their journey home after saying their goodbyes and offering well wishes and prayers. Some traveled by wagon, others rode horses and many walked. Urlachen was especially concerned for her Mother and her beloved sister Aoife. She even went so far as to offer them lodging with her and Donnel during the conflict, but her mother wouldn’t hear of it. She told her daughter that the first days of marriage should be spent alone with her husband. Urlachen’s mother also had the new baby, they named Claire, at the castle to return to. She reassured Urlachen that they would remain safe and that the whole matter would be resolved quickly. Urlachen and Donnel then kissed them both goodbye, and as they mounted their wagon and knew she would miss them terribly.

After making their way to their new home by wagon, they stopped for a minute to admire the beautiful castle King O’Brien had given to his son and daughter in law.

When Urlachen least expected it Donnel picked up his bride and carried her through the heavy door into the place they would live happily day after day, the place they would raise their babies, the place they would entertain friends and family, the place they would grow old, and the place they would live together until death. Urlachen had never been so happy before, they both felt truly blessed to have found one another. She knew their life together would be as wonderful as she had imagined.

Siege and Exile (ch 11)

Chapter 11/ MacMurrough

During these turbulent times of the 12th century, County Clare was a land of rolling hills and hastily built walls, placed for division and protection. The walls didn’t protect but they did divide. They divided the kingdoms and Noble lands causing much misery and violence, especially fthe last few months for King Dermott MacMurrough of Leinster. His castle faced three armies and was under brutal siege for three long months. Much to Dermott’s surprise, King O’Rourke had attacked with a vengeance. Dermott’s men fought back diligently and kept them at bay for as long as they could. Dermott’s allies, King O’Brien of Thomand and King O’Lachlan’s men survived for three weeks, but then regretfully retreated. They had taken too many casualties and had no choice.

For three months nothing went into the castle and nothing came out, and the provisions for the inhabitants were as low as their morale. One such inhabitant was Princess Aoife. She had not spoken to her father for weeks and only a handful of times since Urlachen’s wedding. She was appalled by the conditions on which they were forced to live because of her father’s selfish actions. Queen O’Rourke still remained in the castle and was at her father’s side most days. Aoife was almost at the point of desperation. She had not talked with Finn for so long, so aside from seeing her mother, servants, and the occasional message from her sister Urlachen who was now in Thomand, her days were spent sad and alone.

Queen Mor and baby Claire were kept in close quarters for much of the time and had developed a strong bond, the kind of closeness one feels while in a perilous situation, forced to survive rather than live. Claire had grown into a beautiful, precocious toddler. She had a unique personality filled with humor, despite the environment in which she had lived for those first months. Queen Mor had never found out much about Claire’s birth parents, only that she had been baptized shortly after birth. No documentation had been found though.

snapshot_52d94a94_731c17ab.jpg

Claire was a beautiful girl. Her hair was a golden blonde, much like Aoife and Urlachens, and her eyes as blue as the sky. She learned quickly too, Mor had taught her to walk and she was learning words very early. Her bright future would start as soon as the siege ended.

snapshot_52d94a94_d31c0f98.jpg

King Dermott had to make a decision. His advisors put pressure on him to ask for a truce with some compromises. King O’Rourke refused and a message from the High King O’Conner arrived demanding Dermott’s immediate exile from Leinster, County Clare, and all of Ireland. Dermott came to realize he had no choice. His people would soon starve and his army would be obliterated. The specific demands of the truce included his exile, and the return of Queen O’Rourke. The high King stipulated that King Dermott’s family may stay in the kingdom if they so choose. The chieftains were all in agreement that the removal of Dermott was the main goal.

The decision to leave was heartbreaking for him. This was his land and his ancestors before him. By birthright he was supposed to rule Leinster until his death. After much thought, he decided he would not leave his people forever and betray his duties. If Dermott was forced to go, he would most certainly return. He would also be taking Norah with him as she had already agreed. During these moments of reflection, he also wondered how his judgment could have been so off when this all began. His decisions were all in haste and he ignored everyone’s warnings. He came to the conclusion that his only thoughts then were of Norah O’Rourke and his judgment must have been clouded.

When all of the arrangements had been made, the truce was announced and the armies retreated. It was determined that King Dermott would leave for England by boat in three days. King Henry II would be notified and special accommodations would be made for the ousted King Dermott.

Queen Mor and Princess Aoife would remain at the castle for the time being until Dermott sent for them, or so was the official plan. The Chieftains had no idea that Queen O’Rourke would be his companion and that Dermott was planning a different outcome.

So came the day for Dermott to leave his kingdom and his country. There was a brief ceremony in the center court of the palace. When O’Rourke’s soldiers came to escort Dermott to the boat he said his goodbyes to his wife, Queen Mor and his daughter Aoife. The The farewell was bittersweet and somewhat cold. Few words were spoken.

They then led him away to the boat set sail for England that evening. It had been secretly arranged that Norah would be brought to the boat just before they set sail. King O’Rourke would be furious but it was Norah’s decision. She would send a letter explaining her actions at a later date.

As they set sail toward the east, the Irish Sea was calm and dusk was approaching. Dermott stood on deck for a last look at his kingdom and homeland. The sun was setting over the hills and a soft haze of smoke lingered in the air above the villages. The sun shone through the smoke creating an orange glow above the greenery, and Dermott realized how much he would miss the land of his birth. But like the sea, he was calm and confident knowing he would soon return.
