The Birth (ch 31)

Chapter 31 MacMurrough/de Clare/Archid
As Aoife’s contractions became closer and more rapid, the pain increased immensely. Finn tried to keep her comfortable, but nothing he did seemed to make much of a difference. Aoife was overcome and in constant agony, she never imagined the pain could be so intense. She was becoming anxious for she didn’t know how long she could withstand it and couldn’t figure a way to alleviate it even slightly.
Finn had made a fire, but Aoife was not cold. She felt that the airless room was getting smaller and the heat she felt tightened her lungs. She dripped with sweat even as he tried to keep her cool with a cloth he kept moist by running to the well every few minutes. This confused him even more since she was actively shivering and sweating simultaneously.
He kept wishing that someone would come by so he could ask for help. He was worried beyond reason at the thought of delivering their child for he didn’t know what to expect. He would have to rely on Aoife to direct him, but seeing as though she was almost incoherent at this point, he wasn’t sure if that was feasible. He would have to depend on his instincts and rely on God seeing him through this. Not only was the baby’s life in his hands, but Aoife’s as well. This thought terrified him enough for a slight tremble to take place throughout his body.
He knew enough to get a pail of water and warm it by the fireplace. This would be used to clean the baby for he was certain this ordeal would be quite messy, as he had been told in the past. He also placed his coat and over shirt on the floor next to her to place the babe in to keep him warm. His dagger was revealed to cut the cord, this suggestion was given by Aoife earlier when she was lucid enough to speak calmly.
When Aoife started to experience intense pressure, she decided instinctively that she needed to push the baby out right then. She indicated this to Finn who was sitting beside her still trying to cool her down. “Now Aoife? How do you know?” He asked nervously, unable to grasp the idea that what she was experiencing would soon produce a human being. “I feel it Finn. Just hold me.” She said, panting in exhaustion trying to remain patient with him. Finn sat behind her and held her up in his arms. He could feel her determination and intensity as she pushed and bellowed a deep sounding growl. She used every muscle she had in hopes of making progress to end the ordeal. “Go check and tell me what you see.” She asked him, out of breath and ever so thankful for a quick rest. “Check? What am I looking for Aoife?” He asked frantically. “Nevermind. Hold me again Finn!” She replied with another round of pushing. While releasing a loud agonizing growl, she could feel the burning her sister told her about. She knew she was close. This time as she fell back to rest, Finn didn’t ask questions. He quickly went to look for anything he could see to inform her of, feeling slightly embarrassed as he peered in an area he wasn’t too familiar with. What he saw made him gasp. “I think I see the head! What you are doing is really working Aoife!” He said enthusiastically, hurrying to get back to her. After a few more excruciating minutes of pushing, Aoife could no longer speak. She waved her hand for him to stay where he was while he checked her progress. Finn could see her face as she vehemently pushed with every bit of might she had. He saw her neck veins pulsing and the blood vessels breaking in her face, which carried a determined grimace. The baby’s head was protruding slightly, so Finn used his hands to protect it from the ground just in case it should project forcefully. Finn could barely control his emotions. Tears streamed and a fixed nervous smile was a permanent feature for the next few minutes.
With the last contraction, Aoife pushed intensely and bellowed out a final scream, while the baby slipped out into Finn’s shaking hands. With this release she laid back in exhaustion, allowing Finn to take over the next phase. Luckily for him the baby choked out some liquids and began to cry, thus turning the newborn from a bluish color to a healthy pink which spread through him in a wave.

Finn was terrified and ecstatic simultaneously, with enough tears to almost blur his vision. He laid the babe in his shirt and proceeded to cut the umbilical cord, which was tougher than he thought it would be. After wrapping the baby to keep him warm, Finn checked on Aoife who was actively delivering more fluids and matter. As she raised herself up on her elbows slightly she resignedly began to speak to Finn. She knew the baby was healthy for she heard the loud cries of protest coming from the once warm and comfortable infant in the womb, now being thrust into a cold world of bright lights and deafening sounds.
“Is it a girl or a boy Finn?” She asked quietly as she caught her breath. As she sat up higher, Finn brought the baby to her and replied joyfully. “It’s a boy Aoife! We have a son.” With tears of elation he leaned to Aoife and kissed her still damp forehead. “How do you feel?”

“Tired.” She answered as she leaned toward the crying infant, kissing his little hand which was covered in a white, pasty substance. “Lay back and rest. I’ll clean him up.” He said smiling a deep grin. “What about his name Aoife? What shall we call him?”
“I have already picked a name if you so agree. I like the name Lorcan, it means little warrior, just like you Finn.” She answered with tears of her own, pearing into his eyes grateful to God that he was there with her again. “I love it Aoife, little Lorcan he shall be.” Finn replied proudly looking down at his firstborn son.
At that moment a wave of reality shot through her. “Finn, what will Richard say? I am worried about what he will do when he finds out about you being here and the baby.” Aoife admitted with apprehension. She knew Richard would go to pieces and wasn’t sure how far his anger would take him.
“Don’t worry about that now. Just rest and we’ll deal with all of that later.” He answered, not allowing his own true concern to show.

Moment of Truth (ch.32)
Chapter 32 MacMurrough/de Clare/Archid

After spending a little time cleaning baby Lorcan, Aoife and Finn sat in awe as they shared their first few moments with their newborn baby boy. As reluctant as he was, Finn rode out to O’Flattery’s manor, where he grew up, to retrieve some supplies they would need for the baby and for the cottage if they were able to remain there. This subject was somewhat skated over for they both were unsure of what was to come.
Aoife stayed back at the cottage with Lorcan feeding his hungry appetite, and taking advantage of those first few critical hours of bonding. As she stared into his eyes she realized that her life was forever changed. Lorcan would be first in her life and she needed to do what was best for him. He would need Finn just as much as Aoife would, but she didn’t know exactly how she would manage it. Strongbow was good to her, but she didn’t love him like she loved Finn. It was an eternal love, and she would love him until her dying day. She was also aware that it was Strongbow’s decision, as well as the church, whether a divorce was possible. She thought of the possibility of an annulment, but it would be almost impossible to attain considering what had happened the previous night. She could ask him to disregard that night, and ultimately it would be his choice whether to let her go to be with Finn. The kingdom was his now and her father was gone so nothing was standing in his way, she thought optimistically.

As Finn loaded the cart with linens, food, some clothes for Aoife he had borrowed from Coblaith O’Flattery, his adopted sister, and a comfortable feather bed for Aoife, he wore his smile from ear to ear. He worked quickly so he could return to the cottage before dark. A servant had found a cradle and baby provisions as well, and Finn really believed he was dreaming. He was hoping he could see Lord O’Flattery, whom he hadn’t seen since his initial imprisonment, but he was involved in keeping his lands safe from the troubles going on with between the new residential Normans and the chieftains.
As Aoife waited for Finn to return, she noticed a drop in the temperature. As she stoked the fireplace she heard the sounds of an approaching horse outside and was relieved that Finn had returned. She finished what she was doing and held Lorcan, anxiously waiting for Finn to come through the door. Much to her surprise, in through the stone doorway came Strongbow and his brother William, brandishing a dagger and a sword. Both parties were taken aback to see each other, but Aoife was more frightened than surprised. Strongbow had anticipated finding Finn here, especially when he saw the horse tied up outside. His shock was noticeable and Aoife figured out immediately what they were there to do.

“Richard, what are you doing with those weapons?” Aoife asked as she held Lorcan tightly, forgetting for a moment that the babe in her arms would come as a shock to him.
“What happened Aoife? You had the baby? Today? All alone?” He asked in disbelief, trying to come near her to offer his comfort and to take a peek of the infant. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

His confusion was apparent and Aoife knew she would have to explain the circumstances of the birth. At that moment she realized she wasn’t wearing anything more than her underclothes, and William was standing in the room. She motioned to Richard, making her embarrassment known.
“William, please leave us for a few moments.” He asked as he waved at him, not taking his eyes off Aoife and the baby. “Are you okay? Tell me what happened?” It was obvious that he was more than concerned. He had an astonished look on his face and wondered how she was able to endure such a traumatic experience alone. He tried to hug her and the newborn, but she backed away.
“I came here early this morning…and that is when it started. Actually I think it started yesterday will all of my back pain.” She replied nonchalantly, trying to avoid mentioning Finn.
“How did you do this my poor girl? You must have been so frightened.” He said, wishing he would let him hold her, and confused as to why she wouldn’t. As he peered into the tightly wrapped shirt that held baby Lorcan, he smiled and continued. “The baby is okay? Is it a boy or a girl Aoife?”

“He is very well. I named him Lorcan.” She answered without looking at Strongbow.
“A boy, how wonderful! Lorcan is a fine name. My I hold him Aoife?” He asked hopefully, trying to heighten her spirits. Just as he finished his sentence, they heard someone approaching the manor. Aoife’s heart sank as she knew this would b the moment of truth. Strongbow looked surprised and as he saw Aoife’s casual face change to a guilty gaze, he became very curious to see who was riding up. He walked to the window, but the sun had gone down, making it impossible to see anything. Deep down he had a gnawing suspicion of who it could be and within seconds his fears would be realized.
Finn ran in quickly. He had seen the horses outside and became quite anxious. He felt for his dagger, and was disappointed to find it missing from his waist. The first person he saw as he walked into the room was Strongbow, standing there with an angry and astonished look on his face. Finn’s eyes met Aoife’s and he could see that she was okay, with only an apprehensive look peering his way.

“What is he doing here?” Strongbow asked Aoife with an irate tone. He wanted to lunge at him that very moment and end this problem, but Aoife was in a precarious state. He instead looked to her for an explanation. “Well he was here when I arrived this morning. I had no idea that anyone was here, but I am very thankful because without him I would not have been able to deliver the baby.” She answered quickly.
“He helped you?” Strongbow replied loudly in worried manner. He knew this was not a hopeful scenario for him. “Okay…so now that I am here, we leave and go back to the castle right?” He asked sternly as he grabbed her arm.

“Aoife isn’t going anywhere and neither is our baby.” He shouted with confidence and finality. He only wished he had a weapon.
“Richard we need to talk about this.” Aoife said desperately as she tried to get his attention. “What is there to talk about?” He asked not taking his eyes off Finn. The tension between the two men was terrifying. “You are my wife and you will go home with me right?”
“Richard, you have the kingdom now, what do you need me for? My father isn’t here to take it away. Please….let me stay here with Finn and the baby. You know it is all I have ever wanted.” She pleaded with tears in her eyes. She couldn’t believe that this was actually taking place after the unbelievable day she had had. She began to feel lightheaded and sat down on the bench.

“You know I can’t do that Aoife, it is more complicated now. We are married in the eyes of God. The church wouldn’t allow a divorce.” He answered turning to her, trying not to show his heartbreak at her piercing words. “You said you would try and make a life with me.”
“I said that when I thought I would never see Finn again. He is here now. We have our baby. Please let me go Richard.” She begged with a slightly raised voice. Strongbow looked at her and then glanced at Finn, feeling himself backed into a corner. He knew he couldn’t just let her go, especially with King Henry of England coming. He also couldn’t bear for her to hate him. He didn’t know how to handle the situation.
“What about last night Aoife? The church won’t allow an annulment now.“ He said this looking straight at Finn. He knew he this would hurt him and he wanted him to feel some pain. It wouldn’t compare to what Strongbow was feeling, but he wanted to knock him off of his victory stool.
“What is he talking about Aoife?” Finn asked curiously. He may have had an idea, but it wouldn’t deter him in the least. He was just grateful that she still loved him. What had happened while he was gone was history as far as he was concerned.
“I was overcome with grief Finn and we did something we shouldn’t have.” She answered glaring at Strongbow while exhibiting a guilty demeanor. “It was the only time. The first and last time Finn.” She tried to walk past Strongbow to get to where Finn was standing, but he grabbed her arm rather roughly.
“Don’t touch her!” Finn yelled, as he looked around desperately trying to locate the dagger that may save his life. “She should be lying down after what she went though today!”
“She is my wife! No concern of yours!” Strongbow screamed crustily.
“She doesn’t want you. Be man enough to let her go!” Finn yelled back as he suddenly felt someone behind him restraining his arm and placing a sword to his neck. Finn tried to free himself but he had been taken by surprise. William had come from the other room when he heard the scuffle taking place. He had promised his brother that they would take care of the problem that day, so he was bound to keep his word.
“No William! Take your hands off him!” Aoife screamed as she tried to run to Finn. Strongbow grabbed her and tried to talk sense into her. “Aoife, this all needs to end. We are a family and you are the queen. We are both rulers of Leinster, without you I cannot rule. King Henry will take the kingdom and give it to someone who will not care like we do. Your father would not want just any Earl from England to oversee his land. You need to think about this.” Strongbow pleaded as he held her shoulders tightly, trying to block Finn from her view.

“Let him go! Richard, tell your brother to unhand him.” She screamed, ignoring Strongbow’s plea. She only thought of Finn but Strongbow’s words did strike a soft spot within her.
“I cannot let you leave Aoife. Not only because I love you, but because I will not let King Henry take this land from us. Everything will change here, in a matter of months all of Ireland will belong to him, don’t you understand?” He said quietly yet sternly. “No I don’t. All I know is that since you came here everything has changed. You brought these people here and now our country is suffering, just as I have suffered.” She answered as she began to cry.
“William, take him outside and wait for me.” He said calmly. After they had gone he continued. “Please don’t say that you have suffered Aoife. I have showed you love and respect with nothing in return. Please, you know that I cannot let you leave and I don’t want you to hate me. Stay with me at least until King Henry arrives, and then we will decide what to do.” He asked kindly, unsure of what that may be.

“What will happen to Finn? You and your brother will come back and do something to him, like you were going to do today. I cannot trust you now.” She said as she cried, knowing that she may have to agree to this situation for a little while, either that or be excommunicated and have to leave her family behind under English rule at that.
‘No harm will come to him. You have my word. Do you wish to talk with him?” He answered trying not to show his delight. After a few minutes to ponder her limited options she agreed to do what she needed to do for the good of the kingdom and her family.
“I suppose I do. Do you promise that once King Henry leaves we will seek an annulment?” She asked sternly, sitting down to rest after the eventful day she had had. “I said we will discuss what options we have.” He said impatiently.
“Then the answer is no, I will not go with you. I am not open to discuss anything. I will stay so you can keep the kingdom, but then I will return to Finn.” She announced firmly, hoping he would agree out of fear.
Strongbow knew this was the beginning of the end. Now that Finn was back, he would no longer have a chance at happiness with her. He could postpone it for a little while but ultimately he knew she would only stay for as long as she had to. He felt hopeless and reluctantly agreed to her stipulations. He wasn’t sure how he would get through the next few weeks knowing that he had failed to make her love him. He didn’t even know how he would get through it. A quick thought entered his mind about perhaps leaving Ireland, he didn’t think it was possible to continue to make this his home without her. At that moment the only feelings he could muster was despair.

Watch you’ll see that Strongbow is not so nice.
I sense and evil vibe coming from him and his brother wouldn’t hesitate to kill Finn if he told him too so that makes him even more dangerous.
I do hope Aoife and Finn can have the happily ever after they’ve been hoping for.{^_^}
King Henry’s arrival (ch 33)
Chapter 33 MacMurrough/de Clare

A few weeks later King Henry II arrived in Waterford. The kings and clan leaders of Ireland celebrated his arrival so as to not upset him enough to have to forfeit their lands also. Strongbow had enabled him to take over Dublin, Waterford and Wexford, creating a justified apprehension from all the remaining kingdoms.
Aoife had stuck to her agreement and lived in the castle with Strongbow to prove that they were in fact married, and that he had truly succeeded the throne from King Dermot through their marriage. Finn wasn’t happy about the arrangement, but trusted that Aoife knew what she was doing. If it had been done only to allow Strongbow to keep Leinster he may not have agreed, but it was for the good of the kingdom, keeping it from being turned completely over to English rule. Aoife had explained to him that Strongbow would be a fair and efficient King, and that the people would benefit in keeping him as ruler. Strongbow knew how the MacMurroughs would want the kingdom to be ruled.
Aoife tried to see Finn as much as she could. Strongbow knew about this and allowed it which heightened his depression and heartbreak. He kept himself busy though, ruling Leinster and negotiating with the English nobles who were appointed Lordships to govern over the newly acquired lands in King Henry’s absence. When his mind wasn’t on his work he would spend time trying to avoid seeing Aoife and the new baby. He would discreetly leave the room if she were to enter and evade any meetings that weren’t vital. His heart physically ached when he thought of how close he was to having her forever and how much he would miss her when she was gone. He had decided the very next day after Lorcan’s birth that he could no longer make her stay with him. It was too painful to know that she loved another and that it was only a matter of time before she would leave for good. He even went so far as to move into his own chamber. His sorrow was inconsolable.

Aoife realized how miserable he was and she felt for him. She may have even felt slightly guilty from time to time. However, even through her guilt and sorry feelings, she wouldn’t change her mind. She looked forward to finally being with Finn and being his wife, the way it should have been initially. She also tried to steer clear of Strongbow in order to ease some of his pain. She stayed mostly in her chamber with Lorcan and visited her family as often as she could.

Her sister Urlachen had her hands very full with her three children. The twins were very active little toddlers and baby girl Slaney was requiring a lot of her time as well. Donnel’s father, King O’Brien of Thomand, had passed away shortly after King Dermot had, so Donnel had become King quickly thereafter, a title he wasn’t exactly sure he was ready for. The chaos in Ireland over the Norman occupation was taking its toll on all of the kingdoms. Donnel had to keep peace with his allies, especially Strongbow, his brother in law.
Aoife’s mother, Mor, was happily living in her quiet manor with her adopted daughter Clare, who was also a bustling toddler approaching her third birthday. She spent much of her free time with Aoife, helping her adapt to life with a newborn. She was thankful that Aoife would soon get the chance to be with Finn for she knew that as soon as they were allowed to marry their lives would begin again. Some days Mor and Aoife would take a special trip together to the cottage to visit Finn. He kept himself busy fixing the cottage and preparing it for when Aoife and Lorcan would return for good. He was also quite occupied with his knightly duties for Lord O’Flattery, keeping order amongst his land due to the turmoil between the kingdoms and the English Nobles.
The day King Henry of England arrived was bittersweet for Aoife. She knew it wouldn’t be long before he returned to England and she could be free from her marriage to Strongbow, but she also felt saddened to know how lonely he would be after she was gone.

They had held a reception for the king at Strongbow’s castle and many people were invited including Aoife’s family, some Irish royalty, the English Nobles, and the Lord’s of Leinster. Aoife was nervous about meeting him for she had heard many stories of how powerful he was and the many tales of his tumultuous marriage to Eleanor of Aquitane. Aoife thought it amazing that they had birthed ten children while she could barely manage the one that she had.
The affair was formal and King Henry was sure to make a speech about Strongbow’s valor and bravery for conquering these lands in the name of England. Of course Strongbow didn’t share this testement but went along with King Henry’s assumptions. Strongbow had never set out to share any of his conquests with King Henry, especially since he had been denied his lands by birthright. He was also quite preoccupied with the more pressing issues of his life. In the past he would have felt honored and he would have anticipated this event. Now he wanted to expedite the affair and move on. As King Henry arrived at the castle with his many men and advisors, the guests lined up to meet him. The mood amongst the crowd was a mix between intrigue and bitterness. When he came to Aoife, she bowed and greeted him.
“Welcome to Ireland Your Majesty. Your visit has been long awaited. “ She said politely accompanied by a curtsy.

“Queen Aoife. It is a pleasure to meet you. Your father told me much about you, may he rest in peace. I am sorry for your loss, he was a good man. He chose well for his successor, I am very proud of your husband. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him.” He replied as held her hand gently. “Thank you Your Highness for your kind words about my father. Yes, my husband is a skilled warrior. We are all impressed by his military expertise.” She answered with a smile.
She noticed that he was much older than she thought. He had graying short hair, rather curly with a small moustache that turned up slightly at the corners. He was small in stature, with a with a portly belly protruding from his robe. He was not at all what she imagined. He certainly didn’t look as powerful as he was. His voice was quite high and she amusingly thought that she was surprised that he could father ten children.
As King Henry went on to speak to the other guests, Aoife noticed Strongbow looking at her. He was obviously watching her every move trying to see if she was saying the right things to the King Henry. This visit would most likely be his last for a long while for he had more important troubles to attend to in France. A strong impression was necessary to ensure he would be confident of the leadership of his new lands. Strongbow also needed him to believe that his marriage to Aoife was solid so he could remain King of Leinster.
Strongbow decided that once King Henry returned to England, he would visit Father Flanagan and request an annulment on the grounds that his marriage had not been consummated. He hated to lie to the priest but it was the only way it would be granted. Father Flanagan wouldn’t question this claim since he knew of the unusual situation from the beginning. They had only that one night together, a night he would certainly never forget, and he hoped Aoife wouldn’t forget it either. He often found himself thinking about it. Aoife was captivated that night, nothing pleased him more. Now he would never touch her like that again, and considering how bad he felt now, he didn’t think he would ever enjoy a woman as much ever again. He could never love anyone as much as he loved Aoife. His thoughts were interrupted by King Henry’s advisors announcing that he would be speaking momentarily. Strongbow snapped out of his obvious daze and walked to Aoife, it was only fitting that he stand with her as the king spoke.

As everyone gathered around, King Henry settled himself in front of everyone and began.
“To my newest subjects, I bid you thanks for my most gracious welcome to this beautiful land of Ireland. Now that I have made the journey here to witness for myself that there is order and competent leadership, I will feel confident leaving as the newly named Lord of Ireland. This whole mission would not have been possible if it weren’t for one of my most loyal subjects, Lord Richard de Clare of Pembroke, now the new King of Leinster. I have graciously given him this Kingdom in return for the courageous battles he fought in the name of England. Soon most of these lands will be under English rule and you will all be part of our powerful empire.”
Strongbow felt proud at that moment. He was standing amongst the men of nobility that avoided and rejected him back in England and now he was being honored by the King. He also felt that if King Henry had not insisted that Strongbow turn over the lands he fought so hard to capture, he may have someday become the High King of Ireland. Ultimately he had no choice. The King’s army certainly outnumbered Strongbow’s by thousands. He decided at that moment not to become bitter and resentful, but to only put forth his greatest efforts to be a great king for the people of Leinster, perhaps the greatest.

The Annulment (ch34)

Chapter 34 MacMorrough/de Clare
After King henry had sailed back to England, Strongbow knew he couldn’t avoid the inevitable. Aoife did not bring up the subject of annulment, but rather waited for him to make the decision to carry it out. Three days later that moment came. Strongbow met with Father Flanagan and explained the circumstances. The priest was very understanding, and even tried to console Strongbow when he noticed the trouble he was having giving the details. His eyes were even beginning to swell up slightly.

“Your Highness, this situation started out problematic. I will grant you this annulment, but see it as a new beginning to carry out God’s plan for you as our new king. Perhaps when you are ready you will find a new bride who will assist you in ruling the kingdom.” He explained sympathetically. He felt terrible for Strongbow. He had known from the beginning that this would turn out badly.

“Thank you Father. I want to do this well. As far as finding a wife, I cannot think of such a thing yet. It might be a very long time.” He replied, wanting to change the subject and be on his way.
“If Aoife had not been attached to someone else when you met her, you would have had a good marriage, but it was not God’s will. I have heard how well you treated her and you will be blessed for that Richard.” He answered as she dropped the formality. He wasn’t talking with a king at the moment, he was talking to a broken man who needed encouragement.
“I was good to her because I loved her more than anything father. How can I forget her?” He asked.

“It was not meant to be Richard. I will pray that you will find peace with this.” As he said that he handed him the signed writ. Strongbow took it reluctantly and knew this would be the hardest thing he had ever done.
As he rode back to the castle, he took his time so he could purposely delay seeing the look on Aoife’s face as he told her the deed had been done. He couldn’t bear to see her face light up at the news. Even though she would try to hide it, it would still be there. As he rode through the countryside he reflected back to the last nine months they had been together. He did everything he could to please her. Every word was kind, every task was completed cheerfully, and he always put her before himself. At that moment he started to feel a strong resentment towards Finn.
“What power did he have over her to make her unable to love me?” He asked himself. He felt that Finn was nothing more than a commoner who had the good sense to pursue the right girl.
“He couldn’t possibly love her more than I do?” He thought as his anger began to build.
He began to ride faster as his temper rose and couldn’t bring himself to think anything but violent thoughts about his rival.
His horse seemed to change course and Strongbow found himself headed towards O’Flattery’s land where Finn’s cottage was located. His mind was exploding with jealousy and he knew he was headed straight for Finn. His horse picked up speed and Strongbow had a look of determination on his face. He couldn’t think straight and he didn’t know the cause of the driving force that was pulling him towards the cottage. His head was spinning and his heart pounded. The anger that ran through his body created his temperature to rise and a slight sweat permeated his skin. His hands stung from the intensity of the grip he had on the reins, but he didn’t feel the pain. His only thought was to end Finn’s life. He couldn’t think of anything else.
As he approached the cottage he slowed down to make sure Finn was the only one there. He saw a figure in the garden and took a closer look. He didn’t have a plan of action, he only knew that he wasn’t going to be the understanding husband any longer. His jealousy was out of control and he decided that if he couldn’t have Aoife, then neither would Finn. He wasn’t in his right mind enough to consider how Aoife would feel, he was incapable of any reasonable thinking.

He jumped off his horse and drew his sword. After realizing the man in the garden was Finn, he headed straight for him ignoring everything else around him. As he got closer he decided he would give him warning of what was to come. He wanted him to know exactly why today would be his last day.

The Fight (ch35)

Chapter 35 de Clare/Archid
“Archid! I am here to settle things my way!” Strongbow yelled crazily.
“What do you want?” Finn replied reaching for the dagger on his waist. He had not seen anyone before with such a wild look in their eyes. He knew why he was there as he expected at least one last encounter with him. No man would ever let the woman he loved just walk into the arms of another man. Not without a fight anyway, he thought.

“You should have just left her alone. Now I have to kill you.” He said wildly with a matter of fact attitude. Strongbow had completely lost all sense of rationality. His anger and jealousy had taken over and his mind only focused on killing Finn. He raised his sword as he approached the garden and noticed Finn’s small dagger. He chuckled sadistically and lunged at him.
“If you do this, Aoife still will not return to you. You will have less of a chance than you have now.” Finn explained logically, remaining calm and strategically planning how he would defend himself.
“This is not about getting Aoife back. I never had her! It was always you who she wanted. So, if I can’t have her, than you won’t either!” He shouted as he swung his heavy sword past Finn’s shoulder. Finn was fast and moved just in time to avoid a fatal blow to the chest. This would certainly be an unbalanced fight, so he needed to be quick. He knew he had to get out of the confines of the small garden. There was a waist high rock wall to his left, so he quickly swung himself over effortlessly. Strongbow followed immediately as Finn raised his dagger.
“Don’t try and run, and put that toy away. You are no match for me with that.” Strongbow said with a smile as they circled each other waiting for an opportunity. “I won’t run, I’m not a coward.” He answered as he quickly leaned to avoid a slash of Strongbow’s sword. “This isn’t going to be as easy as you think.”
Before he could finish his sentence, Finn crouched down and lunged at Strongbow’s lower body which was easily blocked by his sword. The dagger almost left Finn’s grip from the force of the connection between the two blades, but he managed to hold on to it. It threw him off balance and he steadied himself by putting one hand into the dirt.
As he looked up he saw Strongbow’s silhouette as the sun was directly behind him. He noticed a confident smile and another forceful slash of the sword. Finn saw it coming and rolled to avoid it. He scrambled to his feet as Strongbow tried to regain control of his weapon. In a split second, Finn found his one opportunity to tackle Strongbow from below. With all of his strength he threw his arms around Strongbow’s midsection, and they both flew to the ground in a heap of dust which hindered their sight.
Finn couldn’t tell if he still had his sword, so he tried as hard as he could to keep his arms pinned until he could position his dagger to take a stab at him.
Strongbow didn’t see Finn coming. He was blindsided and fell hard to the ground. Finn was strong and was wrestling him, trying greatly to keep his hand from reaching his sword, which did fall to the ground a few feet away. He anxiously tried reaching it, but Finn held his arms at the elbows.
Strongbow decided he needed to rid himself of Finn, so he turned over and kneed him in the stomach. Finn lost his grip on him as he tried to recover the air that had been knocked out of him, and Strongbow crawled to retrieve his sword. At this point his smile was gone and his anger had returned. When he was fingertips away he felt Finn grab his leg and then a sharp pain pierced the back of his thigh. He grimaced at the enormity of the pain and reached back to locate the source. As his hand retracted he saw that it was covered in bright red blood and parts of his leg began to go numb. While he was investigating his wound, Finn managed to get to his feet and grab the sword.

Blood trickled onto the dirt and Strongbow knew his injury was more than just a flesh wound. He was completely stunned and couldn’t believe Finn was hovering above him with his own sword. He felt completely defeated.
“You might as well kill me now and get it over with.” He said as he gasped while his leg throbbed in pain.

“I can’t kill you. You are the King. I only wanted to avoid being killed.” Finn replied fully out of breath. He ran to the front of the house and came back with cloth which he wrapped around Strongbow’s thigh. “Don’t bother. I will surely die anyway.” He said despondently, laying his head back into the dirt.
“I’ll take you back to the castle and the doctor will fix it.” He replied quickly as he tried to get Strongbow to his feet.

With one arm around his waist, he hoisted him onto Finn’s horse. Strongbow winced but tried to stay calm. Finn tightened the cloth and climbed onto the horse himself. He rode as fast as he could, all the while hearing Strongbow’s cries with every extra jostle. He knew Strongbow had lost much blood when he felt him slump over his back as they rode. He hoped he wouldn’t lose consciousness, and he was somewhat concerned about the explanation he would give when they arrived at the castle. He rode faster as he thought of the possibility of him dying. He didn’t want Strongbow dead, he had only wanted to keep himself alive.

The Request (ch36)

Chapter 36 MacMurrough/de Clare/Archid
When Finn and Strongbow arrived at the castle, the guards immediately summoned the doctor and put the almost lifeless Strongbow into the nearest bed. Finn was kept outside to be questioned about the incident. When Strongbow was inside, as soon as he came to, he let it be known that Finn should not be charged with any crime. He told the guards and the castle steward that Finn should be commended for getting him here so quickly. He knew that he was very lucky not to have been killed then and there. Finn could have ended his life, but instead tried to save it.
Aoife was called to Strongbow’s chamber and was told the meager bits of information about what had happened. She was horrified and immediately blamed Strongbow for he had promised her that there would be no violent action taken against Finn. When she walked in ready to show him how angry she was, she stopped suddenly and was taken aback by what she saw.

Strongbow was laying in the bed, extremely pale and sweating. His breathing was labored and she could see the dozens of bloody rags used to stop the bleeding and clean the wound. The doctor had just finished closing his punctured thigh.
She reluctantly walked closer to the bed and found him to be semi-conscious. He immediately opened his eyes, and turned to her. He knew at once that she was there for he smelled her familiar scent of the dried roses and nutmeg powder that she used in her hair.
“Aoife. I am sorry. I don’t know what happened. I couldn’t stop myself.” He said in an urgent whisper as he tried to lean in closer to her. “Finn did what he had to do.”
“Don’t worry Richard. There isn’t anything we can do about what happened. You need to heal your leg. Let’s not even bring it up again.” She said managing a small smile, trying not to notice how awful he looked. He had an almost grey coloring, and his eyes were bloodshot. His usually combed hair was wet with sweat and he was trembling slightly. Never before had she seen anyone look as bad.
“Try to sleep, it will help you heal. I’ll be just outside.” She said quietly as she kissed his cheek. As she walked out she had a bad feeling. He didn’t look at all like the man she had known for these many months. She headed straight for the doctor with urgent questions. He could only explain to her about the chance of infection, and how it would most likely be fatal.
“You mean he could die from this?” She asked with a horrified expression. “Yes, there is a good chance. The wound was deep and it is typical in this sort of injury. I have sent for Father Flanagan since King de Clare refused to see the castle priest.” The doctor replied sadly.
“I must go find his brother. Thank you Doctor. If anything should happen, send for me please.” She said as she hurried out of the hall.
Aoife had sent for William and when she learned that he was out hunting she decided to go look for Finn. She was told he was outside with the guards so she quickly made her way there. She knew he would want to see her and explain about what happened. She also knew that he would be worried about what she may be thinking.

When she saw him he was sitting on a wooden bench with his head in his hands. He seemed quite worried. When he looked up and saw Aoife’s sweet face smiling at him, he felt better. He had just been told by the castle steward of Strongbow’s grave condition and felt pangs of guilt. He jumped up from where he was sitting and walked to her. He knew better than to show any affection toward her since she was still legally married to Strongbow, who was the King after all.
“Aoife, I am sorry. It was the only way.” He explained hoping she would understand.
“I know, Richard told me. Don’t worry he doesn’t blame you. The castle steward told me that he attacked you. Are you okay?” She asked as she reached for his hand.
“I’m fine. I heard he is not doing well.” He answered looking genuinely concerned.

“He looked awful, not like himself at all. I don’t know what is going to happen.” She replied sadly, starting to tear up.
“There was a lot of blood. I just wanted to stop him, I didn’t mean for it to be this bad.” He said with a pleading look.

Just then William rode up quickly with his hunting party. It was obvious that he had heard the news of his brother. “Why is he here? He needs to leave Aoife, don’t you think?” William asked her quite indignantly as he passed the two of them. “I should have finished you when I had the chance.” He muttered quietly under his breath as he slowly passed Finn. Aoife, unable to witness William’s verbal attack, agreed with him.

“He’s right. Maybe you should go back to the cottage. I have to get back inside.” She said to Finn with a loving look as she hated to ever have to say goodbye to him. An embrace would be inappropriate, so they said their goodbye silently.
William ran straight to the chamber where Strongbow was being treated. He was stunned when he came through the door and saw his brother looking so unlike himself. He had seen him battle many illnesses and injuries, but never did he witness such a transformation in just one afternoon. Strongbow was the epitome of confidence and charm. He carried himself with a strong will and a desire to serve a great purpose. Today William saw before him a man he didn’t recognize. Strongbow was laying there, but his will was gone. William couldn’t think of what to say as fear took over is entire body, he could only make small talk.
“Richard, what are you doing lying around? You should have gone hunting with us. We had a very good day.” He said with a forced smile.
“Why are you avoiding the obvious? I am that bad off, aren’t I?” Strongbow asked his visibly shaken brother, adding a small smile.
“Well you have looked better brother. Why did you go out there alone? I should have gone with you, I could have helped you.” He replied with a furrowed brow.

“I didn’t plan it, I just found myself there. I was getting the annulment writ and I was angry.” He answered quietly, straining to make his voice heard. “So you did get the writ?” William asked, surprised to hear that his brother actually went through with the agreement of the annulment.
“It is in my pouch. Get it for me and give it to Aoife after…”He said as William interrupted. “After what?”
“You know as well as I that this is not looking very good. The doctor has sent for the priest. I know what that means.” Strongbow replied slowly.
“You will be fine. This is a mere bruise.” He paused a moment and began again in an urgent tone. “You are finally King. You mustn’t give up on yourself now!” He knew that once someone accepted the thought of dying, it was only a matter of time. “We have come a long way, and we have done everything we said we were going to do. Get better so we can finally live it.”
“We need to discuss something important, sit down.” Strongbow said seriously. “I understand everything you just said but I need to be realistic. If it happens… I need you to bring him here.”
After a few seconds of thoughtful silence, William spoke hesitantly, knowing full well who his brother was referring to. “Are you sure that is what you want to do?”

Strongbow sat up slightly, looked into his brother’s eyes and spoke in a whisper. “King Henry will take Leinster when I am gone if there is no heir. I would like you to send for him now.”

Past Regrets (ch.37)

Chapter 37 MacMurrough/de Clare
Strongbow spent the next few days fighting the inevitable infection that developed in his thigh. The days as well as the nights were spent trying to reduce his fever which spiked every few hours. Another doctor from the village had been called to help out, and between the two physicians, they tried every treatment they knew or had heard of.

Aoife spent many hours by his bedside. She felt compelled to see him through this just as he had spent many hours with her while she was sick during her pregnancy. Knowing that baby Lorcan was being cared for, Aoife would sit hour after hour with Strongbow, mopping his radiating skin with wet rags. She would try to talk with him, but he was for the most part delirious most of the time. Through his delirium he brought up many subjects that didn’t make sense to Aoife. He would blather incoherently and yell when he became agitated about events that didn’t exist, only made up in his feverish mind. He continually spoke about of a boy named Gilbert. Aoife had never heard of this person before so she only thought of it as a fever induced delusion. However, he was persistent about this subject. He would sit up and stare into her eyes, explaining in great detail about this particular boy in England. She could only agree and calm him back to sleep.
What Aoife was unaware of was that at that moment, word was being sent to a small village on the west coast of England requesting that a boy named Gilbert, just as Strongbow had said, be brought to Leinster immediately. William had sent a boat with a hand picked messenger to personally see to it that the young man be brought to Strongbow’s bedside to possibly take over as King, should Strongbow perish from his infected wound.

The young man had been raised by his mother on a farm his entire life, and was Strongbow’s illegitimate son. He knew of his father but he was never part of his life. Strongbow took care of him financially as much as he could, but for the most part this young man grew up knowing hard work and sacrifice.

Strongbow had always felt somewhat ashamed of his actions which is why only his brother William knew of his existence. He never had the nerve to tell Aoife.
Strongbow had met the young woman when he himself was young and was forbidden to see her after it was known that she was expecting a child. They were of separate classes, her being a farmer’s daughter, bound to work for the Lord of their land, and Strongbow’s family was one of high position, his father being Lord of Pembroke. It was a brief affair and he was almost relieved when his father stepped in. Even he felt he was too young to settle into marriage and family for he was a bit wild in his ways.
For the first few years he never gave much thought to the child, but when maturity arrived he felt obligated to at least see to it that the boy had adequate food and clothing. The time he had spent with Aoife had brought the memory of the young boy into the forefront of his mind. Seeing her pregnant, and anticipating the father role had produced paternal instincts and regretful feelings about the boy he left behind.
Fifteen years later the young man was being summoned to perhaps succeed the throne from a man he never knew, and become king of a place he had never heard of.

Chapter 38 MacMurough/de Clare
As Gilbert and his mother Isabel sat and ate their supper, there was a loud knocking on their door. They were both startled and Isabel insisted she be the one to find out who it could be. She hesitantly walked across the cold floor, not knowing what to expect. Everyone they knew either walked in or knocked lightly before walking in. She opened the door slowly trying to peer through the vertical opening and was surprised to see a group of official looking men holding a paper document.
“Miss Reese. May we come in?” The messenger asked trying to look non-threatening. “Who are you and what do you want?” She asked defiantly.
“We were sent from Leinster Ireland by Lord William de Clare of Pembroke.” He answered figuring she would recognize the name and come to realize the situation.

“What in the world is he doing in Ireland and why does it concern me?” Feeling curious she then invited the men in, observing their disheveled appearance.
“Yes, you may come in, but be sure to wipe your feet.” After the men had entered the small room, she glanced at Gilbert who was looking quite anxious. “What is this about?”
“Well Miss, we have specific orders to bring your son Gilbert Reese de Clare, and you of course as his guardian, to Leinster Ireland immediately. He is the son of King Richard de Clare, is he not?” The messenger asked as he motioned to the wide eyed boy. “Yes he is. King Richard de Clare you say?” As she squinted her eyes with skepticism.
“Yes, he is now the King of Leinster, but an injury has rendered him incapacitated. He has personally requested that his natural son be brought there in case of his demise. Your son is his only heir.” He explained.

“What do you mean? My son may become a king? This makes no sense. I thought Lord de Clare still resided in Pembroke. Now he is a king in Ireland?” Isabel had to sit and absorb all that she had just heard. After a few moments of silence, she reached over and put her hand on top of Gilberts and gave him a reassuring look as he appeared quite apprehensive.
“Do not worry, I will find out more about this tomorrow.”
“I am afraid that is impossible miss. We need to leave immediately, the boat leaves tonight and we need to be on it.” He explained firmly.
“Tonight? What about our home, our land, our work? We cannot just abandon our home and our animals?” She asked excitedly, still unbelieving of what she was hearing.
“We are taking care of that now. We are arranging for everything to be cared for until you can return to settle your affairs.” He answered.
“This is all happening too quickly.” She said as she held her throbbing head.

“Mother, I do not wish to go. I don’t want to leave.” Gilbert added firmly realizing he may have upset the impatient men staring at him.
“You don’t understand. Your father could already be dead. We need you to get there before anyone claims Leinster. There is a lot of turmoil and disorder going on there now. Anything could be happening why we stand here discussing this. I have been on a boat for two days, I am hungry and tired and you are wasting time.” The messenger said impatiently.

“I do not know my father. Why does he want me?” Gilbert asked sadly.
“You are his only heir. No more questions. We need to leave immediately. You may pack your things in a trunk and we’ll be on our way.” He said hastily as he walked out of the room, the other men following closely behind.
Gilbert and Isabel could only stand there looking shocked and bewildered. This was a life changing moment for the both of them and they weren’t even given ample time to take in all the information enough to realize just how much it would affect them, especially Gilbert. Even though he was a strong willed young man, and displayed a confident demeanor, he was fearful. He never imagined actually meeting his father, and never in his wild dreams did he envision traveling to another country. He couldn’t even fathom the idea that his father was a king or that he could be an heir.

He was a farmer. He had always pictured himself taking over his mother’s farm soon, allowing her to live without the hard laborious work. He had also had his eye on the village blacksmith’s daughter, Sarah. His plan was that he would marry soon, have children and work the land, the way everyone else lived. This experience would turn his whole world upside down. He was a simple young man and aside from his love of reading and writing, he didn’t know how he could fit into a world he knew nothing of.

Aoife learns about Gilbert (ch39)

Chapter 39 MacMurrough/de Clare
As Aoife walked out of Strongbow’s room, anxious to retrieve the doctor, she literally ran into William.
“I am sorry Aoife, I didn’t see you coming. How is my brother today?” He asked as he tried to think of the words he would use to explain the forthcoming situation. He had waited until the very last minute to talk to her about Strongbow’s son, for he didn’t know quite how she would feel. The last few days had been emotional for Aoife, and she was in a fragile state of mind. Her unrealized guilt was taking over and she was compensating by spending every minute by his bedside.
During the quiet hours while he slept, she could only recall all of the wonderful and kind gestures she received from him and she was reminded of how unappreciative she was. To watch him lay in the bed, perhaps for his last few hours of life, was getting the best of her. She didn’t know how she could ever forget how ungrateful she was to him if he was to die. William knew how distressed she was and telling her something of such great importance, that his brother was too ashamed to tell her, might have made her feel even worse. However, William knew he had to talk with her now for he has just received word that the boat carrying Gilbert and his mother Isabel had arrived safely. William new it was now or never.

“He is actually better. I was going to fetch the doctor to inform him that Richard is lucid and aware of what is going on.” She answered excitedly.
“That is great news Aoife. I would let you go find the doctor, but I would like a few minutes of your time. There is something we need to discuss.” He said seriously.
“Okay, what is it?” She asked somewhat concerned. She had not had that many conversations with William, so she was unsure of what the matter would be.
William decided to start with what she might perceive as good news, then segue into the news about Strongbow’s son.
“Well, first things first.” He said as he handed her the annulment writ that Strongbow had given him to hold the day of the fight. With all that had gone on the days prior, he didn’t think it would be appropriate to give it to her before, but now that he was showing improvement it made it all the more relevant to issue the paper that would legally end their marriage.
“What is this William? She asked as she started to read the writing.
“It is the annulment writ Richard had gone to get the day this all happened.” He answered.
With a look of discovery on her face she continued. “This is why he was so upset. It makes sense now. Poor Richard. I am going to put this away and not think about it until he is fully healed.“ She replied sadly as she turned to leave.
“There is actually one more thing we need to talk about Aoife. Come sit down.” He asked kindly. With that kind of preface, Aoife became nervous herself.
“Okay, the day Richard was injured he asked me to do something for him, which at the time made perfect sense, and still does actually. There is something you don’t know, something Richard was ashamed to tell you.” He began to explain, speaking slowly and choosing his words carefully.

”What could he have been ashamed of that I didn’t already know?” She asked humorously, trying unsuccesfully to lighten the expression of William’s face.
“When Richard was young, about 16, he had met a girl who was…let’s just say not of our social standing. She was a farmer’s daughter and…to put it bluntly, she became pregnant.”
“Oh my!” Aoife gasped, not knowing how to react.
“Needless to say our father was in a fit of rage and forbid him to see her again.” He said shaking his head.
“Did he ever see his child?” She asked not believing what she was hearing.
“No, but he has taken care of him throughout the years.” He answered, surprised at how well she was reacting. “His name is Gilbert and he is 16 years old.”
“Gilbert? Richard mentioned a boy named Gilbert! He told me about him when he had the fever. I didn’t believe him, I thought it was only a delusion.” She explained with a half smile, recalling in her mind the information Strongbow had given her night after night. “He never met his son?”

“No, he thought it was best, he didn’t want to interfere in the life his mother had made for him.”
“That is ridiculous.” She said with a frown.
“Well he had his reasons. Anyway, last week when I first saw him he asked me if I would find him and bring him here, just in case…an heir would be needed.” He said reluctantly.
“So you found him? Where is he? Oh my, I can’t believe Richard has a son. He could have told me.” She spoke restlessly, trying to take in all that he had said.
“The boy lives in England with his mother. I sent a boat immediately to retrieve him, and they have safely arrived. I wanted to tell you before they got to the castle.” He explained.
“Is he prepared for all of this? Does he know that his father is king now, and about all that has happened?” She asked. immediately worried about the welfare of the boy. She knew he was most likely very confused and intimidated. She was sure that at his young age he couldn’t possibly be able to process all of what was about to happen to him.
“I am sure he does now. I sent my messenger to explain all of the details. I also wanted to let you know before you meet him, let it be known that they are mere farmers. They don’t live like we do. His mother owns the land I believe but they are simply farmers who raise animals and grow crops.” He explained in a hushed voice, almost sounding ashamed at what he was revealing.
“I thought you said Richard took care of him? Shouldn’t he be living comfortably?” She answered, trying to keep her annoyance to a minimum. “He gave him what he could. Richard had financial trouble in England, he told you that.” He answered firmly.
“He lived pretty well, you would think he would want his own son to live the same.” She said as she stood up, flustered by his need to justify their superior behaviors.

“Aoife, this girl was used to this way of life. She grew up farming the land. I believe he helped her purchase her land years ago.” William answered not sure why this was being discussed.
“I don’t understand. This boy has worked his entire life and you and Richard grew up privileged. Your son is also quite comfortable.” She said trying to make him see her point.
“My wife was a Nobleman’s daughter.” He answered folding his arms.
“Oh I see. Because Richard’s son is half peasant, he doesn’t deserve to live like we do. Never mind, I don’t want to talk about it any longer.” She said angrily as she turned away.
“I am sorry Aoife. I don’t know what else to say. They should be here soon, and I hope you will be there to greet them. His mother’s name is Isabel.” He said, relieved that the conversation was nearing an end.
“Did you at least give them proper chambers, or did you put them with the servants?” She asked sarcastically.
“Now Aoife, no need to be so upset. Two of our most beautiful chambers in the north hall are being set up for them as well as a new wardrobe.” He answered hoping to make peace with that answer.
“William, please be respectful to them. Think of this boy as your nephew. He deserves to be treated properly.” She pleaded.

“I am fully aware of that. I am going to see my brother now. Thank you for your time.” He answered quickly, bothered by her need to lecture him. “Aoife, when will you be leaving us to go to Finn’s cottage?”
”I don’t know William. That is the furthest thing from my mind right now. I have only thought of Richard this past week, I am not as heartless as you think.” She said firmly as she pivoted on her foot and left angry.

Meanwhile, several horses and carts arrived at the castle containing Gilbert and Isabel, and their meager trunks of clothing and special items.
As Gilbert was led up the walk to the front of the enormous castle doors, he was amazed at what he saw. Never had he seen something so grand. He stood motionless for a moment, frozen with fear and uncertainty. He could not comprehend all that was happening to him. He closed his eyes for a moment hoping and praying to be awoken from a dream. When he opened them and realized he was still there, his heart began to race and he felt queasy.

He looked back at his mother for encouragement, she smiled at him and gave him a look of assurance, which gave him enough confidence to walk up the steps and confront the unknown.

I hope Aoife is able to put Gilberts mind at ease, poor guy what an overwhelming sitution. I wonder if Aoife was right and Strongbow should have taken better care of them or if Isabel was happy bringing up her son up to work on the land.

For the First Time in His Life (ch40)

Chapter 40 MacMurrough/de Clare
Aoife was in her chamber seething with anger towards William. Her first reaction was to immediately have her belongings packed and taken to her mother’s manor, but she couldn’t leave Strongbow just yet. She felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility towards his recovery, and couldn’t abandon him just as soon as his health improved slightly, even though William suggested it indirectly.
It would be difficult to share the castle with William now, but she knew she could handle anyone, especially a smug nobleman riding the coattails of his brother. Normally she wouldn’t be thinking such things about someone, but she was highly irritated by his pompous attitude, and his disregard for her efforts in helping his brother. It was times like these that she wished she was living carefree with Finn. She knew though that they would have to wait until all was back to normal here before she could make plans for a wedding to Finn. She would have to be patient.

As she stood by the window to breathe some fresh air she noticed a caravan of guards and horses walking to the castle. She strained to get a better look and noticed amongst the burly soldiers was a young man with red hair, and an attractive woman by his side. She knew at once who it was and felt a sudden sadness come over her as she watched the woman, obviously concerned for her son. Aoife decided to get herself together and be one of the first to greet them if it was possible.
By the time she had reached the great hall, William was there talking with Gilbert and his mother. William’s son Edward was there as well, and Aoife thought she saw a resemblance in the two boys who were now cousins. Aoife walked to the group in a confident manner and waited for an introduction from William.
William’s words were stuck. He knew he had to introduce everyone but couldn’t think of what Aoife’s title should be.

“Your Highness, this is Gilbert Reese, Richard’s son from England. And this is Gilbert’s mother Isabel Reese.” As he paused to think of what to say next, Aoife shot him a look of ease and decided to introduce herself.
“Very pleased to meet you both. My father was King MacMurrough, I am Aoife” She said, hoping they would know the situation of her father and Strongbow. This way she still had her title but didn’t need to reveal that she was Strongbow’s former wife. No need to complicate things so quickly.
“Yes, she is Princess Aoife. King MacMurrough passed away not too long ago. I believe you were informed of the details on the journey here.” William added, thankful that he didn’t have to go into great detail.
“Yes sir, I was told. I am sorry for your loss your highness.” Isabel spoke with her eyes lowered, nodding in respect.

“Thank you Isabel. How was your journey here?” Aoife asked, trying to be as informal and friendly as she could.
“It went very well thank you.” Isabel replied unreserved as she could tell through Aoife’s eyes that she was welcomed here, at least by her.

“And how about you Gilbert? Did you enjoy the voyage?” Aoife asked enthusiastically, knowing that it was most likely their first time on a boat, and it was light conversation considering what else was going on in their lives at the moment. She also noticed that Edward did not look to happy too be there. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a scowl upon his face.
“I enjoyed much of it your highness, just a bit of seasickness is all.” Gilbert replied shyly, also noticing the cold reception he was getting from the boy standing next to him.
“Well, we should show them to their chambers. I am sure they are in need of rest. I will personally introduce you to your chamber maids, they can give you all that you need. Then you may rest until supper.” William explained trying hard to be hospitable, but realizing it was because Aoife was standing there hanging on his every word. He tried not to notice that their clothing was in need of changing and their overall appearance would have to be altered to be able to conform to the lifestyle of royalty, but it was hard for him to ignore it.
“Sir, if I may ask how is King de Clare? No one has mentioned his injury.” Isabel asked curiously, seemingly interested in his well being. Aoife immediately spoke over William.
“He is doing better. The infection has subsided and he is no longer feverish.” She answered with enthusiasm. “That is wonderful news your highness. If I may ask, when will he want to meet Gilbert?” She directed this question to Aoife, feeling uncomfortable asking such a direct question.
“That I am unsure of. I can ask him when I see him, or maybe William knows.” She answered in a friendly tone.

“I don’t know. I will discuss it with the doctors and see when he will be allowed to have visitors, too many people might tire him easily.” William answered, directing this toward Aoife who he was obviously annoyed with. Isabel could sense the tension between the two and decided to ask no further questions.
When they arrived at their new living quarters, Gilbert’s mouth dropped in amazement. As they walked through the door the first thing that caught his eye was the most comfortable looking bed he had ever seen. He could actually see the some of the feathers. His bed back at home consisted of uncomfortable straw, he couldn’t wait until he was allowed to try it out. He also noticed a shelf of books. He had learned to read a few years earlier, he had not understood until now why he was taught. His mother only said that it had been a gift from someone, he knew now that his father must have arranged it.

William felt that it was necessary to show them to their chambers himself. He wasn’t too receptive to Aoife’s criticisms, and still thought she was out of place with her remarks, but he did take some of her advice to heart.
“You both will be provided with new clothing as soon as our tailor measures you. For now your chamber maids will be provide you with the clothes you will wear until then.” William explained. Gilbert looked down at his clothes and wondered why he needed to get new ones. Isabel was excited for she felt subconscious when she was first arrived and slightly embarrassed now that William was pointing it out.
“Now let’s go to your chamber which I am sure you will be satisfied with. Gilbert you may stay here and prepare for a bath.” William added, still trying to be as kind as he could be.
Gilbert leaned to his mother and kissed her gently on the cheek. “I will be fine mother.”And with that the two gave each other comforting smile and Isabel turned to follow William.

Her chamber was equally beautiful, unlike anything she had ever seen. Close attention was made to creating a feminine atmosphere as well. She felt extremely grateful.
“So you are satisfied I presume?” William said with a smile as he noticed the pleased expression that spread upon her face.

“Yes. I am extremely grateful for all that you have given us.” She said humbly.
“No need to be grateful. Gilbert is King de Clare’s son. You are family.” William said to her, not believing the words actually came from his mouth. “I had better leave you to prepare for supper. Your chamber maid is waiting just outside the door to help ready your bath.
“Thank you sir.” She replied with a smile as he turned to walk out of the room. When Isabel knew she was finally alone, she fell onto the bed with a joyous laugh and thought to herself that maybe life would be changing for the better after all.

An hour later after Gilbert had been bathed and dressed he sat upon his bed reading one of the many books he had found on the shelf. He was very absorbed in his reading when he heard a sound. As he looked up he saw a figure standing in the door. He knew at once from the look on this man’s face, and the fact that two men had helped him in the door, that it was his father. He was seeing his father for the first time in his life.
